Vagueness of DMC alerts eroded trust, caused confusion

On Oct. 1 at approximately 1:09 p.m., students received text alerts, emails and phone calls regarding a threat that was made against a female student and the East Campus. As the alert didn’t seem too urgent, campus activities and classes were to continue as scheduled. Not until long after the alert did students, faculty and staff begin to find out what really caused the alert to be sent out in the first place. There was a man, possibly on our campus, with a gun. He was threatening to shoot a student and the school. Why that…

Syrian refugees likely to be a burden on the U.S.

The crisis going on in Syria is based on a civil war that has displaced approximately 11 million Syrians. The civil war has been going on since March 2011. The civil war started with anti-government demonstrations. Many people in Europe refuse to take in these refugees for fear of the unknown and economic purposes. The United States should follow suit. The United States is already over $18 trillion in debt. With the added costs that the refugees bring, the debt will be unfathomable. The current cap for Syrian immigrants by 2017 is 100,000 refugees. This number already is a burden…

Voter ID law would cut down on fraud at ballot box

One of the primary arguments against voter ID requirements in Texas involves harming those who don’t have a photo ID or minorities who don’t have easy access to birth certificates. This argument describes the law as discriminatory; however, the purpose is to prevent fraud, and its benefits outweigh the consequences.   Government-issued photos IDs, though they are not full-proof measures for stopping voter fraud, are a step toward preventing it. A photo ID is required for many things, and it’s not considered wrong in those cases. Doctors, stores and driving a vehicle demand government-issued identification, and it’s a respected protocol…

Professionalism is DEAD in the city of Corpus Christi

In the September issue of Texas Monthly, it was brought to our attention that there is a major problem with professionalism in Corpus Christi. Jeff Winkler who wrote about Fiesta de la Flor in his article, “Amor Prohibido,” was seeking information regarding Selena. Winkler had asked a question regarding previous efforts put forth by the city to commemorate the late Latino singer and was met by an unprofessional spokeswoman from the Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). The spokeswoman was unsure of an answer, so she called a co-worker. While waiting for the individual’s arrival, the “peppy” spokeswoman said, “She’s awesome.…

Let’s talk about sex, baby–then again, maybe not

Kaliegh Benck Reporter Have you ever really “just said no”? President Ronald Reagan and first lady Nancy Reagan’s “Just Say No” campaign in the ‘80s against drugs has applied its catchy slogan to many aspects of modern day situations, including sexual education. In this respect, we’re giving students and young adults one solution to a question that will be presented to them multiple times in their lives. The U.S. offers funding to states under Title V that teach abstinence-only courses. States that accept this hefty chunk of change commit to teaching only abstinence as a means of sexual education.…

Media must learn from Rolling Stone’s failure

Kira Hays Co-editor-in-chief When Rolling Stone magazine published an article in November about a rape at the University of Virginia, students, faculty and staff were outraged by the alarming accusations. The article was written by Sabrina Erdely and told the story of a UVA student, known by the pseudonym Jackie, and her experience when she was, allegedly, raped by members of the fraternity Phi Kappa Psi. It turns out the article was not only inaccurate, but some of the members of the fraternity Jackie stated raped her weren’t students, or even real people. As more people became aware of the article,…

Allowing guns on campus wouldn’t be worth the risk

C. Robert Gonzalez Reporter The earliest recorded school massacre occurred on July 26, 1764, in a small colonized town in Pennsylvania. Records of the massacre, which are a little sketchy at best, show that three men entered the small town’s schoolhouse and murdered nine children and the school’s principal. Nearly 250 years later schools across the nation have seen no relief when it comes to school violence. The latest occurrence here in Texas happened on Aug. 13, 2012, at Texas A&M University in College Station. A gunman on campus shot and murdered two people including a police officer. The gunman…

Changing the world one leaf at a time

The acronym THC may be familiar to some, but what about CBD? For those who don’t know, THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol, one of the active ingredients in marijuana, or the one that gets you “high.” CBD, cannabidiol, is the other ingredient. Unlike THC, CBD does not have the same effect on the body or mind. Instead, it can actually treat people suffering from pediatric epilepsy, autism, cancer, pain, PTSD, brain injuries, anxiety and various neurological conditions, according to doseofnature.com. So why is this not being administered to the people who so obviously need it? It is because its partner is…

Ephemeral news proves it can also be quality news

Lexy Garcia Reporter Snapchat, a massive social media platform, recently introduced an important update to its app — the ability to browse news stories. As users of Snapchat are generally ages 13-25, you may have begun to familiarize yourself with the different types of news coverage that this new feature provides. Essentially, you’ve been “added” by some of the country’s most popular media companies and given easy access to their daily updated content. Keeping with the style of a Snapchat “story,” the content is only available 24 hours, and can be skipped through or entirely ignored. The user decides…
