Promising defense comes up short

The Houston Texans have gotten off to a shaky start this season after having playoff aspirations in the preseason. Their troubles have been highlighted by an ongoing quarterback shuffle between Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett. Hoyer was the opening day starter, but was benched in favor of Mallett after just three quarters of play. Mallett then started the next four games, but was benched in the second quarter of the Week 5 loss to Indianapolis in favor of Hoyer. Hoyer was set to be the starter again in Week 6 versus the Jaguars and coach Bill O’Brien claims…

Injuries take toll on America’s Team

The Dallas Cowboys are in big trouble right now with all the injuries they have suffered and it’s clearly affecting the team. Tony Romo broke his clavicle in his non-throwing shoulder and will miss another seven to 10 games and their other star player, Dez Bryant, has another week or two before he comes back. The Cowboys are 2-0 with them and without them so far they are 0-3. Brandon Weeden is not the answer at QB as he lacks confidence to throw the ball down field and instead elects to throw it to the check down, and…

There is nothing more satisfying than accomplishing one of your goals. For Jeff Gutierrez, one of Del Mar’s most accomplished students, making it to the World International Triathlon Union (ITU) Grand Final in Chicago is one goal he never thought he would finally reach. Gutierrez, who originally hoped to become a firefighter, returned to school to earn his associate degree in fire science and improve his chances of landing a job. His work in the Kinesiology Department, however, led him to discovering one of his greatest unsought passions — triathlons. Jeff Gutierrez, a fire science major, stands proud with his…

Vikings should be open to quidditch

Samantha Douty Managing editor One of the more interesting raves among larger universities is the incorporation of quidditch, the Harry Potter series sport, now being played by students. Students are using the sport as a fun and unique way to get together with friends to be competitive against other students at different universities. Del Mar College’s intramural sports program should follow the example of the larger schools and create a quidditch team. Quidditch at Del Mar will bring more students to campus to play with friends. This, as a result, will create more loyalty and involvement with the school.…

Join the challenge, all 100 grueling miles of it

Vivien Sanchez Editor-in-chief The good news: The 100 Mile Challenge is in full swing. The not-so-good news: We’ve proven that journalists and math aren’t the best off friends, as we grossly miscalculated our goal for this semester in our last issue. As a team we would love to entertain the idea of completing 15,000 miles, but realistically, some of us want to survive to see graduation in May. After redoing the math, we are relieved to be aiming for a more practical goal of 1,500 miles. With 15 people originally intending to take part in the challenge, each would…
