Are you one of those people who think there’s nothing to do in this town? Well, Geeks Who Drink is here to offer up a little excitement in your life.
Geeks Who Drink is a Denver-based company that hosts bar trivia at over 300 pubs and restaurants in 25 states. Their quiz is a collective effort of dozens of quizmasters, writers, fact-checkers, graphic designers and artists.

Local downtown watering hole Cassidy’s Irish Pub hosts Geeks Who Drink at 8 p.m. every Wednesday.
Mike Reese, bartender at Cassidy’s, enjoys having the quiz at the pub. “It brings in a crowd that normally wouldn’t come out and drink on a Wednesday, which has been really beneficial for us,” Reese said.

The quiz consists of eight rounds of eight questions each, played by teams of up to six people. Questions are read aloud by the quizmaster and teams write down the answers, turning them in at the end of each round.

Local quizmaster Kyle Bauer said the questions are actually written by people from all over the country. “They have writers from all over the states that input rounds,” Bauer said. “You can get paid $30 a round if they choose the one that you made.”

The questions range from everything from celebrities in trouble to wordplay to bad television. There are also two audio rounds: a “Name that Tune” style round, and another round composed of soundbites from movies and TV. “It’s a lot of fun and it’s free to play AND you can win prizes,” Bauer said.
Former Del Mar College student Molly Pierce attends the quizzes because it’s something different to do.

“I like that it gives you a reason to go out and it engages you,” Pierce said. “It breaks up my week and gives me something to look forward to.”
Winning teams get street cred, bar cash and other prizes depending on the venue. Bonus questions for free pints are sprinkled throughout the quiz also.
The Geeks Who Drink crew is always looking for new recruits for quizmasters. All you have to do is check out their website at GeeksWhoDrink.com and fill out an application.

“I’ve been involved in Geeks Who Drink for about a year and a half,” Bauer said. “I got involved because I used to own Sparrows Landing, a bar and grill in Flour Bluff, and I wanted to be the quizmaster, so I signed up and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it so far.”
