Essay contest offers scholarships as prizes

Del Mar Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) and the Vikings Alumni Association are putting together an essay contest scholarship this fall semester. Almost $2,000 in prize money will be awarded to winners.

The scholarship contest is an opportunity for students to explain how Introductory Algebra concepts are useful in non-math courses and how they help in non-math classes.

“The essay contest started this fall,” said Maththew David Perry, associate professor of English and QEP coordinator. “The QEP for the college is starting its fourth year.”

The submitted essays must be around 300 to 500 words. The top three contest winners earn scholarship money.

“There are three scholarships that the Viking Alumni Association have made available this semester: $1,000 for first prize, $500 for second, and $250 for third” Perry said. The contest will be repeated next semester, as well as in the 2015-16 academic year.”

“I will add, however, that the essay contest is open to the entire DMC student body. It does not matter if they have enrolled in a QEP course or not. Any student who enters the contest is eligible to win. So, any DMC student may enter the contest and win a scholarship.” Perry said.

Essay submissions must be sent to QEP@delmar.edu by Oct. 31.
