Safe Space Club to hold viewing of documentary

The documentary “Stonewall Uprising” will be screened Oct. 15 at Del Mar College.

The Mosaic Project of South Texas, Pride Corpus Christi and the Safe Space club will host the event.

“’Stonewall Uprising’ tells the story about what life was like for the LGBTQ community before the Stonewall riots,” said David Villarreal, a board member of the Mosaic Project. “It shows the struggles that LGBTQ people faced.”

The screening is free, but will have limited seating. Reserve your tickets at pridecorpuschristi.com through EventBrite.

The screening will be preceded by a reception at 5 p.m. and followed by a panel discussion on “The Future of LGBT Rights.” The panel will consist of Del Mar Regent Susan Hutchison, Safe Space club president Sofia Jimenez, community activist Kitana Sanchez and more distinguished guests.

“I hope everyone will learn more about the LGBTQ community, its history and the importance of standing up for our rights.” said Jimenez.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. The documentary will examine the events leading up to the riots that marked a critical turning point in LGBT history.

The Mosaic Project of South Texas and the Safe Space club hope to collaborate on future events.

The screening will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 15 in the Retama Room on the second floor of the Harvin Center.
