SGA to offer Safe Space training, certification

The Student Government Association and Coastal Bend Wellness Foundation will present a virtual event to give students an opportunity to obtain more information on the LGBTQIA+ community.

DMC students and faculty are invited to tune into a three-hour Safe Zone training program course that will result in certification.

The virtual event will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 19 and at 10 a.m. Oct. 22 via Microsoft Teams. Students only need to attend one of the meetings.

Students and faculty will receive e-mails, which will include a link to access the free event.

The SGA plans to raise awareness for the community and invites many to join them.

The Safe Zone Program aims to support equality in the community and promote acceptance.

“The training provides information and resources related to sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression and brings awareness of personal ideas, stereotypes and assumptions related to the LGBTQIA+ community,” said Sofia Jimenez, president of Student Government Association.

Individuals can show their support by taking the initiative to gain more knowledge by tuning into the event.

“All attendees will receive a Safe Zone Certificate, a Safe Zone decal, and be entered into a drawing for prizes,” Jimenez said, “but most importantly attendees will be given a safe place to learn and ask questions related to the LGBTQIA+ community.”
