You are what your ancestors ate and experienced, study says

We’ve all heard “you are what you eat.” But is it possible to still be what your grandparents ate? This theory was explored at the genes vs. destiny seminar given at Del Mar College on April 22 by Del Mar College Associate Professor Zaldy F. Doyungan, Ph.D. Doyungan explained the concept of epigenetics, which is the study of the regulation of gene expression. This concept explains how who we are is at least partially determined by the choices our relatives made. For example, Doyungan explained that if your grandmother or grandfather experienced starvation in their life, then you could still possibly…

Fourth season of ‘House of Cards’ knocks it out of the park

“House of Cards” has become one of the most binge-worthy shows available on Net ix, and Season 4 did not disappoint. “House of Cards” is a political drama about a politician named Frank Underwood, played by Kevin Spacey, who forces his way to power and makes many enemies along the way. Even though this is a political drama this show does not bore you with politics; the writers do a very good job of keeping the show exciting. Netflix ‘House of Cards’ is not like conventional politics. It is cynical, dark, and makes for great television. Season 3 ended on somewhat…

The league will be ending on the Tuesday after Spring Break, March 22. Gabriel Myers/Foghorn Aaron Combs and Irene Trevino play spikeball…

DMC early voting reaches new high

Some 718 people voted early at DMC this year, while another 122 came out on Election Day, according to the Nueces County clerk’s website. In the previous two primaries when there was a presidential nomination up for grabs, Del Mar did not have nearly as many people voting. In 2012, 37 people voted at Del Mar, but much of that was probably due to the fact that the primary voting in Texas did not take place until May…

Local elections are where the people matter

March 1 kicks off the election season with primary voting. The general elections follow this November, and the presidential candidates are taking all the attention. This is choosing the most powerful leader in the free world, so understandably there is a certain level of excitement for this. The national elections are not where our vote has the biggest impact— that comes from the local elections. Our local elections are where our vote has the most impact, and it’s where we elect the people who decide what is best for us on a day-to-day basis.
