Tacos With Tera and the Salsa Señorita – Microphonic

Tera Elwell / Web editor The infamous Benys brothers, Robert and Andrew, co-founders of local band Microphonic, sat down with me and Kaliegh Benck at Hacienda Vieja to talk about their new music while enjoying some delicious tacos. Kaliegh: How often do you practice since Julio (Correa, guitar) lives in Austin? Robert: Not that often. We’ll usually split it up into group stuff like I’ll practice with Erikh (Whitworth, drums) whenever we can. Me and Andrew live together now so we practice like all the time but Julio will be able to practice like once or twice a month. It’s…

Online data increasingly vulnerable

Recent data hacks have students questioning safety By Kaye Young / Reporter In the modern age, data safety is of great importance. Recent events such as the hacking of major retailers, such as Target and Nordstrom, raise awareness about a serious and underlying issue. However, most college students have to worry less about retail stores being hacked and more about their school. More so since education websites typically respond the slowest to any sort of major problem, leaving the information at risk. The average response time for a serious vulnerability is 193 days, but for those working with education it is…

The Tontons share stories of love and music

By Kaliegh Benck / Editor-in-chief  While most bands these days struggle to find a unique sound, it’s rare for many to accomplish such. However, one band has undertaken and defeated the task and they’re not too far from home. Hailing from Houston, The Tontons blend several genres while seeming to create a genre exclusive to them. The morning after hitting House of Rock’s stage on their first visit to Corpus Christi, the band chatted over breakfast about their latest album, tour life and guitarist Adam Martinez’s humorous follies. Their song ‘Magic Hour’ was featured on Rolling Stone’s Daily Download this…

By Amber Quaid / Reporter Del Mar College students will get to show off their artwork in the Student Art Association’s 25th annual Juried Art Exhibition. Over 200 pieces were entered into this year’s art show. The art show required that the pieces were produced in a Del Mar art credited class within the last two years. The classes were located in the Fine Arts Building and included printmaking, design and still life, to name a few. The pieces could not have been previously entered in student art exhibits. The artwork submitted was reviewed, as entry does not guarantee the piece…

Treasures on the 5th floor

by Amber Quaid / Reporter Chris Tetzlaff-Belhasen, Director of Libraries, said the fifth floor of the William F. White Library holds a “hidden little treasure”. This treasure room contains 42 sculptures that have been collected for over thirty years from the Del Mar National Art Shows. Last year’s gallery expansion added an additional room to help display the growing sculpture collection. The artwork is set up in an art gallery style with certain pieces plexiglassed to protect the fragile artwork. Pieces such as “Missing Point” are one of these few because even though it appears metal, it is actually lightweight…

Tacos With Tera and the Salsa Señorita – Leopold and his Fiction

Tera Elwell / Web editor Recently getting off a 230-date tour, Leopold and his Fiction seek rest in an alternative fashion than other bands might. “We tell everyone it’s a break but really we’re playing shows and still recording,” lead singer Daniel James said. “We love Corpus. This is home away from home.” Rooted in Austin, Texas, the band describes their sound as Motown-esque with a slight British Invasion. For those who haven’t heard their music before, they suggest listening to “Better off Alone” or “I’m Caving In.” “We’re a really dynamic band,” James said. “On any given album we’ll…

However, not even veteran world-traveler could overcome the realities of cancelled flights due to winter weather. Yourofsky has visited to lecture to Hollendonner’s classes several times before. “His speech offers a series of compelling arguments in defense of the rights of animals,” Hollendonner said. “The logical structure of his presentation…
