Gender stereotypes addressed by faculty in workshop

Mark Young myoung@foghornnews.com   While society has become more progressive in the past decades, there are a lot of traditions and notions still present. Gender roles are one. “How do you define success?” That’s how Jerry Dugan, an education consultant at Christus Health and former Women’s Shelter community educator, began the March 9 faculty workshop called Breaking Out of the Gender Box. The workshop was aimed at helping faculty understand how gender roles affect students and how to help nontraditional students. The workshop went over common roles that men and women are “boxed” into and how it affects their future…

Foghorn staffers say their goodbyes to Del Mar College

Samantha Douty Editor-in-chief It saddens me that this is my last issue of the Foghorn. My time at Del Mar College and the Foghorn are coming to a close, but I will never forget my time here. I started at the Foghorn my first semester at DMC. I was in my mass communication class, when Robert Muilenburg offered extra credit to anyone who worked for the paper. Me, being the nerd I am, jumped at the opportunity, and I am grateful I did. I worked for the newspaper in high school and I promised myself I wouldn’t continue in…

Foghorn gets new look, new editors

Welcome to 2015, Vikings! You’ll probably notice that the Foghorn has a new look and feel this semester. We’ve switched from a standard broadsheet newspaper to a tabloid size, for myriad reasons. First and foremost, we hope the new format is more friendly for student readers, who no longer will need to claim an entire table to open the Foghorn. The new size should make it easier to read at your desk or while relaxing between classes, and will easily fit in your bag or back pocket if you want to bring it with you and finish reading it later.…

Farewell Vikings!

Leaving a legacy in good hands Working at the Foghorn was not on my agenda for Del Mar College. Managing editor for the Foghorn, what is that? Here I stand though, about to leave my post as managing editor, and I am a mix of emotions and thank you. I see the future of the paper and know it is in good hands. I want to thank Scott Beckett for his red pen, and how many numerous beautiful marks it made on my articles, to improve not only the words but also the person writing them. I want to thank…

The future prospect to replace the provost’s position is still…

Del Mar College offers degree in addiction studies

Students learn to counsel people through recovery Sarah Fecht / Reporter National Recovery Month creates awareness, prevention and treatment for substance abuse and mental health disorders and also urges people to reach out for recovery. Even though Recovery Month ended at the end of September, there is always a need for people to reach out for help. Substance abuse and treatment programs aren’t always well-known or talked about. However, it is an unfortunate reality for countless individuals and their families. Del Mar College has a counseling degree program for students who wish to help those through recovery and prevention education.…

Smoking may soon be prohibited

Recent survey finds mixed opinions about the proposal By Tera Elwell / Web editor Many who lead a hectic lifestyle turn to nicotine as a stress reliever. Del Mar College students may soon be denied this privilege. On Feb. 6 the Student Government Association held a meeting in the Harvin Center where Professor Bob Long, then head of the Faculty Council, presented a Faculty Council resolution on a smoke-free campus. His resolution called for smoking areas, but the Faculty Council later voted against that plan and decided to propose a smoking ban with no smoking areas. The ban would prohibit the…

Recycle program takes off

By Maria Lara / Reporter Here at Del Mar College you can find a recycling bend around practically every corner. You can also find recycling containers in a few classrooms across campus. Kelly White and Chris Tweddle, with Del Mar College Safety Risk Management, are in charge of the recycling here on campus. Del Mar has more than 50 recycling bins between East and West campuses. There are also numerous recycling bins in every building and some professors have even taken the extra step by placing “homemade” recycling bends in their classrooms.
