With students rolling into the spring semester, the Intramurals Department rolled out a Welcome Back Bash at Sk8land in Annaville on Feb. 6. Carla Gamez-Vela, the new director of intramurals, organized the event, which included snacks, games and prizes. Del Mar students skated for about two hours. DMC student Diana Nguyen was one of several students to attend the skate party and said she was looking forward to participating in intramurals this year. “Just to be active and make new friends,” Nguyen said of her motivations. Biology major Angela Remmers also laced up her skates for the party. “I hope…

New ‘Scream’ movie provides plenty of jump-scares

“Do you like scary movies?” It is considered one of the top five iconic quotes in a scary movie, according to screenrant.com. The latest installment of the cult classic “Scream” hit theaters whether or not we were ready for it. Aside from the original cast making a comeback including Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette, some extra special characters from previous movies also make appearances — it’s like they rose from the dead. This film takes place 25 years after the original Woodsboro killings by a serial killer in a Ghostface mask, where every 10 years or so a…

‘Ghostbusters’ is a call worth making

ho you gonna call? I’m gonna call my mom because this movie hit all the soft spots in my heart.  If you didn’t grow up with the original 1984 “Ghostbusters” directed by Ivan Reitman, that’s OK. But if you did and you have not gone to see the new “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” directed by Jason Reitman, son of Ivan Reitman, in Mushu’s words, “Dishonor! Dishonor on you, dishonor on your cow…” because when you think about a Ghostbusters reboot you think of the all-female version we don’t all like to talk about, well it’s like it never happened. And I get…

Myers seeks revenge in “Halloween Kills”

“Cult classic or reboot regret?” may be a question Halloween fans are asking themselves after viewing the latest movie in the Halloween franchise that started 40 years ago. To start off, it would not make sense at all without a small clarification — movies made from 1981 to 2009 never happened. At least not in this storyline, directed by David Gordan Green and scripted alongside Scott Teems and Danny McBride.. Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie Strode, Michael Myer’s (aka The Shape) lone survivor from the babysitter murders in the 1978 “Halloween” film but taking place 20 years from the…

This year, the Cain Gallery has transitioned back to in-person viewing and has reopened to feature this year’s fall show, “Permanent Collection Exhibition.” The decision to transition from virtual to in-person is part of the college’s Return-to-Campus Plan Phase 3. In this collection, the art on display was purchased from 1970 to the most recent purchase from this year’s 2021 show. The art department added to the collection this year featuring the 2021 Joseph A. Cain Memorial Purchase of…

County offers tips for Halloween safety

With upcoming festivities for Halloween, the Nueces County Public Health District wants the community to continue to practice social distancing precautions. While the district recommends decreasing the risk of exposure by staying at home and enjoying activities with family and friends it also shared the following tips for those who are planning a night out. The district suggests wearing a mask, and not just a Halloween mask, to help protect those who are not able to receive the vaccine. Remember to continue social distancing as well as avoid crowded gatherings. Continue sanitizing your hands, especially between trick or treating. If…

Enrollment down 2.3% from last fall; credit hours up

Board of Regents also hears about plans for new police department building  The Board of Regents learned of the latest enrollments numbers at its Oct. 5 meeting. There are 10,401 students registered this fall, down 2.3 percent from fall 2020, which had 10,678 students. One likely cause of the drop, officials said, is that the fall 2021 semester began at the height of the COVID-19 delta variant.  Even though the number of students was down the college credit hours were up 4.6% from last fall, enrollment figured showed. “It’s significant to point out that contact hours are up from fall…

‘Venom’ sequel heavy on dialogue but good

Eddie Brock and his symbiote make a comeback in their comedic sequel “Venom: Let there be Carnage.”  Brock (played by Tom Hardy) is still being investigated for the duo’s suspected crimes from the last film. Brock tries to keep Venom on a low profile, meaning no more decapitations till the heat is off, but he can’t seem to get through to him, causing a rift between the two just before we get to the main plot when Carnage wreaks havoc in San Francisco. I enjoyed most aspects of this film, except for the constant relationship banter between many of the…

White Library undergoes renovations

Resources still available to students, faculty, just in different locations The William F. White Library, located at Heritage Campus, has closed its doors for renovations. The “down-to-the-bones” renovations could take as long as two years, according to librarian Alan Berecka.  Students will still be able to use library resources but in different locations while the work is completed.  The library was originally built as a two-story building in 1976, with its structure built to support three to five floors in all. The third through fifth floors were completed in 1979, although the fifth floor wasn’t used until 1998. “With the…

License still required to carry gun on campus

House Bill 1927, which allows for the permitless carry of a handgun for people 21 and older, went into effect on Sept. 1, meaning people without a License to Carry may now carry in Texas if they meet certain requirements. However, the new law does not apply to college campuses. In 2015, Senate Bill 11 set a requirement for all public colleges to allow licensed individuals to carry on campus property concealed, with the exception of some locations on campus where weapons are still prohibited. HB 1927 allows Texans to carry openly or concealed unless they have been convicted of…
