5K run around campus

The 5K Fun Run that took place in front of the gym on Tuesday had few participants but high spirits. Intramural workers cheered racers on as they ran. The race involved going around the out- side edge of the campus twice in order to reach the distance of 5 kilometers. DMC’s Intramural sports hosts 5k neon run

Google Intramural sports will be hosting a 5K run on March 29 at 3:00 PM. The event is open to all students and faculty of Del Mar. In order to take part in the race, you must take 5 canned foods to Gym 104 that are at least 10 ounces or larger. When you turn these cans in, you will receive a “can ticket” that will allow you to participate in the race. The theme of the run is neon, so runners should throw on the brightest clothes they have. Physical therapy class raises money through Zumba

The Del Mar College physical therapy class pulled out all of their funky moves at their zumbathon fundraiser March 9 in the Retama Room inside the Harvin Center to raise money to attend a state conference in October. Kim Whitley, a Zumba certified instructor and physical therapy student, discussed what Zumba really is. The battle to eat healthy on a budget is ongoing. Most people are under the assumption that to partake in a nutritional menu is costly. It does not have to be. Zumba classes heat up at Del Mar

The Kinesiology Department is hosting Zumba and yoga classes for all Del Mar College employees. Classes are offered weekly and are a part of the department’s efforts to increase health and wellness among DMC employees. “We’re trying to get people to be more aware of their lifestyle and to get them moving more,” said Judy Phillips, Kinesiology Department chairwoman. “Healthy employees make for a better work environment.” According to Phillips, for the program to continue, more people must attend the classes. To celebrate Yoga Awareness Month, the Del Mar College Counseling Center and Kinesiology Department will be hosting free yoga classes every Friday in September. Classes are open to DMC faculty, staff, students and the community, and will be held in the Kinesiology Building in Room 202 from 12:30-1:30 pm. “Yoga has physical, spiritual, mental and emotional benefits. East Campus wins Blood Center award

Sarah Fecht Reporter The Coastal Bend Blood Center recognized Del Mar College’s East Campus on Wednesday by presenting the college with the 2014 Top Performer Award in the education category. The center collected 603 units of blood during its 21 drives on East Campus in 2014. This is the second consecutive year East Campus has been named top donor of the year. Texas A&M University-Kingsville came in second with 350 units of blood collected, while Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi was third with 326 units.
