It’s time to rediscover music

Kaliegh Benck / Editor-in-chief “Generationals,” or those born between 1980 and 2000, also known as Generation Y, are blamed for a lot these days. As a generational I see the plight that those older than us have dealt with. We’re a selfish, materialistic community who give no second thought to those around us — that’s speaking collectively of course. Fortunately, there are still those who have a true passion for things that are no longer appreciated to their full context anymore. When it comes to music, there’s a small demographic of those who appreciate older styles of finding and listening to…

Give movies another chance

Joshua Johnson-White / Reporter From the classics like “E.T. The Extraterrestrial” and “Jurassic Park” to the iconic films like “Pulp Fiction” and “Fight Club,” time has definitely made these titles last. Though these movies did well in the box office, the Internet has given people ammo to either review them as flops or successes in film history. Fast-forward a few years and suddenly everyone is giving 2 cents online before paying for an $8 movie ticket. With all the information that is seen going into these movies, why do we continue to bash these films when we know how much goes…

Origin story conquered in new ‘Gotham’ series

Caped Crusader’s beginnings intrigue viewers Victor Rhodes / Reporter Viewers can delve into the world before Batman in Fox’s “Gotham.” Batman, created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, made his first official appearance in Detective Comics No. 27. “Gotham” follows James Gordon, played by Ben McKenzie, a young detective for Gotham City police investigating the death of Thomas and Martha Wayne, along with his partner, Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue). As these two detectives continue searching for clues, they come across new and familiar characters from Batman comics. Gordon forges a friendship with Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) during Wayne’s death investigation.…

Suburban showdown: Rogan vs. Efron

‘Neighbors’ brings comedic fire to Blu-ray and DVD Jonathan Garcia / Reporter “Neighbors” is a comedy directed by Nicholas Stoller and starring Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, Rose Byrne, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Dave Franco. The movie, released May 9, was a summer hit at the box office, making $268 million, and was critically well-received. The film could go both ways — it could be either the worst movie of 2014 or be really hilarious and fun to watch. As the Blu-ray/DVD makes its debut, it is definitely worth picking up a copy as it is raunchy and definitely will make moviegoers…

Golden Crown Inn fortune not good

The Flavor Samurai and Flavor Flav / Foghorn staff For this installment of Economic Crunch, we took advantage of the cooler weather and walked from the Harvin Center to the Golden Crown Inn at 2739 S. Staples St. It was an easy walk that left plenty of time to get back to campus for our next class, and, most importantly, offered several items for less than $10, making it a perfect fit for a hungry student on a budget. With so many fast-food places and Mexican restaurants near campus, the Golden Crown sounded like a good chance to try something different.…

It’s time to exalt the elephant in the room

Kaliegh Benck / Editor-in-chief I was sitting on my porch, gathered by my closest of confidants, those who swear you’re constantly in a “no judgment zone,” the friends who insist on indulging whatever is on your mind, when it happened: that Godforsaken uncomfortable silence followed by the shifting of feet and gazes — the elephant in the room. The topic brought up was white privilege, something that’s been trending consistently as of late. From the raised hands and voices of those avenging Michael Brown’s death in Ferguson to those who are of this privileged tribe attempting to defend themselves, white…

Police not as trustworthy as thought

Midori Allen / Reporter With the recent events from Ferguson, Missouri, the subject of police brutality has become more apparent. The stories about how police officers are illegally harassing, killing and shooting civilians are overwhelming and common. Ever since grade school, with giant assemblies featuring a meet-and-greet with officers while being able to sit in an actual police car, it has been ingrained into our minds that we should trust the police force. As we get older the assemblies turn into police officers arresting us for drinking and driving or doing illegal drugs. But from what is ingrained into our…

Eating meat is mean, activist says

Vegan talks to DMC students about converting Lexy Garcia / Reporter Gary Yourofsky has dedicated his life to persuading people to stop murdering animals and become vegans, he told Del Mar College students during a recent visit to East Campus. Animal activism has led to Yourofsky’s arrest in 60 countries and his banishment in five. In recent years, Yourofsky’s lectures received national attention and one became the most viewed speech in Israel. He has converted close to 1 million people to veganism in Israel, he told students in Professor Maria Hollendonner’s ethics class on Sept. 11. Yourofsky calls for the treatment…

It takes a Village to feed hungry Vikings

The Village Café offers a big Greek welcome to all Chocolate Madonna and The Salad Sassinator / Foghorn staff As college students we can probably all agree that money is constantly an issue. We have tuition, books, bills and, most importantly, appetites. With that in mind, the Foghorn is continuing its mission of finding the best restaurants within walking distance of East Campus that offer a full meal, plus drink, for $10 or less. This week we decided to walk to The Village Café, at 920 Louisiana Ave. As usual, we’ve gone incognito to maintain the integrity of the review.…

They came, they waited and finally Destiny was theirs

Fans eagerly await midnight release of new game, are not disappointed Jonathan Garcia / Reporter Dozens of local gamers eagerly awaiting the recent release of “Destiny,” the newest first-person shooter for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, flocked to Gamestop on South Staples at Saratoga for a midnight release party on Sept. 8. Many set up tables outside the store as early as 9 p.m. to get their hands on the highly anticipated game developed by Bungie Studios, makers of the “Halo” trilogy. Gamestop, in addition to buying pizza for those waiting in line, hosted a “PlayStation:…
