Thank you for (not) smoking

SGA discusses whether campus smoke ban is necessary By Tera Elwell / Web editor Smoking on campus — to ban it, or not to ban it? That was the main topic discussed during the Student Government Association’s Feb. 26 meeting. Professor Billy Long, chairman of the Faculty Council, along with SGA members, debated the pros and cons of having a smoke-free campus or possibly having designated smoking areas. City ordinance states all smoking should occur at least 10 feet away from the doors of a building or any walkway that people would have to directly use. However, students and faculty members often…

Jack Ryan returns with little depth

Film feels rushed but does have some good action scenes By Jonathan Garcia / Reporter “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” is a reboot of the famous Jack Ryan series created by Tom Clancy. The film is directed by Kenneth Branagh, who also stars in the movie alongside Chris Pine, Kevin Costner and Keira Knightley. The movie was originally scheduled for a release on Christmas Day but was pushed back to Jan. 17 to avoid competing with “The Wolf of Wall Street.” The character of Jack Ryan has previously been portrayed by Alec Baldwin in “The Hunt for Red October,” Harrison Ford in…

When friends become family, great things become possible

Cody Bahn / Editor-in-chief When I started this paper, I had almost nothing. I was sleeping in my car and crashing on different couches. This office quickly became my home and the paper, my family. I have been around this paper for far too long and I have had the honor of being editor-in-chief for half of that time. I’ve seen a lot of faces come and go. The people I have worked with are family. I care about them and this paper. I’ve tried to make this as respectable of a paper as I could. So here goes the really…

I’ve stepped up; now, it’s time to step out

Eddie Puente / Associate editor This paper is on its last legs — at the end of this semester it will cease to exist. Or will it? It has been said many times that print news is soon to go the way of the dinosaur, eight-tracks and the payphone. So why would anyone intentionally choose to sit through a news-writing class? The instructor is argumentative, demanding, and, believe it or not, very passionate about journalism. Del Mar is fortunate to have such a man leading future journalists through the steps necessary to share with the world the news of the day.…

A world of opportunity awaits

Raul Alonzo / Web editor I often find it difficult to make the appropriate changes in my life, and I can be pretty awkward and terrible at “goodbyes.” That being said, as a matter of reflection, there are a few things I can say about my time at Del Mar that I feel have made lasting impacts on my life. The time spent here at this school I can ultimately chalk up to as being beneficial. So long as one approaches their classes with an open mind, and rejects the notion that one knows everything worth knowing, then one can always…

‘Thor’ sequel a fun superhero film

Lots of action, good performances keep fans entertained Jonathan Garcia / Reporter Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins return to star in the highly anticipated sequel “Thor: The Dark World,” which continues the phase-two storyline of “The Avengers.” Kenneth Branagh, who directed the first film, backs down from the series and Alan Taylor takes over as the director of the sequel. The first “Thor” film entertained audiences, but many people felt some aspects could be improved in the second, and the sequel is a fun superhero film. The Dark Elves, led by Malekith (Christopher Eccleston), try to take…

Title Fight’s new EP full of emotion

Midori Allen / Distribution manager Revelation Records released the newest EP by Title Fight, “Spring Songs,” on Nov. 12. “Spring Songs” continues right where “Floral Green” left off back in September 2012. The opening song, “Blush,” has climatic opening guitar riffs and drums with the signature vocals and wails from bassist Ned Russin. It has the similar sound from their albums “Shed” and “Floral Green” in one song. It’s hard to not feel the emotions that the bassist’s vocals put into the song. The end of “Blush” slowly drips into their second song, “Be a Toy.” Don’t let the upbeat tempo…

It’s the walking, talking and texting dead

Eddie Puente / Associate editor Zombies, zombies, zombies — everywhere you turn there are zombies. And that’s not counting the ones on television or at the theaters. All around you, you can see “creatures” shuffling around, heads down, mumbling to themselves. It’s that 3-inch by 6-inch electronic device that is surely sent from the depths of Hades that controls the masses like a brain-control machine. Having witnessed students walk into cars, into other students and into closed doors is a prime example of the power that these machines command. You can be sitting in class and hear that telltale sound…

The shortcomings of the ballot box

Raul Alonzo / Web editor As 2013 comes to a close, the country once again finds itself in the throngs of Election Season, with numerous positions up for grabs, including the governor’s seat in Texas. For many outside the political mainstream, in the immortal words of Ned Stark, “Winter is coming.” All political will, at this point, seems oriented toward the ballot box — that sacred altar that has become the heraldic standard of all aspirations toward fulfilling the promises of a people’s democracy. “Winter,” at this point, denotes the general apathy toward any more direct objectives outside of this…
