NFL finally gets serious on domestic abuse issues

By John “Mugz” Muguerza / Columnist  On Aug. 7, three-time Pro Bowl running back and 2012 Super Bowl champion Ray Rice received a standing ovation in Baltimore, Maryland, from Ravens fans at M&T Bank Stadium. This gesture was not earned because he donated money to a charity, saved someone’s life or did anything spectacular for the team or community. In fact, it was the complete opposite. Rice got this praise as a show of support after being arrested in February at a New Jersey casino on domestic violence charges. The charges alleged that Rice struck his then fiancée (now wife),…

Men’s roller derby making comeback locally

By Amber Quaid / Managing editor Corpus Christi has a new team, the Grave Diggers. This is a men’s roller derby team. You heard correctly, men’s roller derby. Roller derby started out as a co-ed sport but because of World War II’s call for men to go fight it left the women to continue the sport. This is how the widely accepted notion of roller derby being a women’s sport was created. The men’s side of roller derby continued but not as largely as the women’s. Then in 2007 the MRDA, or Men’s Roller Derby Association, was created. The MRDA has…

Ending the semester with a slam dunk

By Carlos E. Gonzalez /Reporter After a successful turnout for the flag football tournament, intramurals director Ryan Murphy thought it would be a good idea to finish the spring semester off with a three-week 5-on-5 basketball league. Just like the past few tournaments, this was a success. The league started April 7 with seven teams having at least eight to nine players and everyone came to play. Each game had two 20-minute halves and was played on a full court.

Especially, since so many of us, employees and students alike, are affected by cancer and its repercussions.”

Stretching out the possibilities

Many may be seeking an outlet to relieve stress. Elizabeth Venegas, a Del Mar College student and a yogi (as those who practice yoga are called), said yoga has benefited her life in numerous ways. “I feel awake and alert and full of energy and internal peace when I finish yoga. It’s such a positive reinforcer,” Venegas said. Yoga is an ancient practice that has been around for more than 5,000 years. A yoga class typically consists of physical exercises…

Dodging, dipping, diving and ducking

Dodgeball tourney action intense as Refugio Kats win By Carlos E. Gonzalez / Reporter As the great Patches O’Houlihan once said, “Remember to pick the bigger, stronger kids for your team; that way you can all gang up on the weaker ones.” It seems everyone who competed at the dodgeball tournament on Jan. 29 had the same idea. Just four teams signed up, but that doesn’t mean the tournament was over in a flash. Each team consisted of two players — one was the muscle and the other the speed. The tournament took place in the racquetball court in the Kinesiology Building and each…

Winter break no time to slack off

Staying fit easy, also can be fun and rewarding Carlos E. Gonzalez / Reporter With the fall semester starting to come to an end, a lot of students are looking forward to getting their hands on some turkey, watching football and getting a break from school. Though some will be resting their minds, a lot will not be resting their bodies. Winter is the time when everyone will be getting in shape for spring. No one is more ready than Del Mar College Intramurals Director Ryan Murphy, who is ending a successful semester of intramurals. This was only his second semester…

Ultimate Frisbee tournament full of action

Close games keep fans entertained as Free Agents take title Carlos E. Gonzalez / Reporter After a three-week basketball tournament held in the gym of the kinesiology building, intramurals director Ryan Murphy thought it would be a great idea to continue the action but switch up the sport. So Murphy introduced Ultimate Frisbee, which could be compared to football or rugby, but not as physical. “We just try to have a variety of different sports, a little bit of a mix of both the traditional sports like volleyball, basketball, and throwing in some nontraditional like pickle ball in the beginning of…
