Don’t be the worst during the break

Spring break is one of the many times of the year that truly bring the worst out in people. Along with Black Friday, New Year’s and the Fourth of the July, people seemingly forget how to be normal and decent and truly make the rest of the population look horrible. Unfortunately, you can’t prevent people from doing all the things that occur during spring break, such as drinking and driving, partying too much, littering and more. However, there are ways to make the world a better place during a week where partying on Padre Island often makes the news for…

Students practicing on other students

Before every cosmetology student graduates, they must have a certain amount of hours practicing on real live humans. While the idea of letting students cut your hair that took you some time to grow is a little frightening, it is must-needed experience for students to earn. While we usually review restaurants for “Economic Crunch,” when we learned of the service and two editors needed their hair done anyway, we sent them to check it out. The advanced dual-credit class takes appointments every week for all the services that are required to get their licenses.   ERIN GARZA-GRANADOS As May approaches…

Healthier food options wanted at DMC

According to a study performed by the journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, students who look at nutritional labels more frequently tend to value healthy eating habits. When you go into the cafeteria at Del Mar College and look at the menu you don’t see the calorie count on the price board. Leon Rodriguez, director of Campus Dining, has tried to put the calorie count on the menu but has had some trouble in getting it processed. “Someone has gotten to me about that and I’m waiting to get a response from the vendors to put the calorie…

Diversity isn’t just a skin thing

One of the main things college should do is teach students about new and different cultures. Being surrounded by new people from different backgrounds is one way to become more cultured and learn about new ideas and ideologies. Del Mar College is offering an African-American history class for the first time in its history this spring. The class will document the struggles and history of African-Americans from early America in the 1500s through today. Take this African-American history class — not because you have to, but because learning about cultures outside of your own is important. Throughout your K-12 education,…

Pepe Serna entertains, inspires at DMC

One of Del Mar College’s most recognizable graduates returned to campus Dec. 12 to help inspire the next generation of actors. Pepe Serna, a member of DMC’s Hall of Fame, visited with students in Kim Frederick’s theater class and answered questions about working in show business while sharing tips with the class. “That’s life; when you get hooked on to something that you really like, jump on that bus and take it, it will take you there,” said Serna, who has starred in more than 100 movies, including “Scarface.” Serna also told the students that no job is too small…

Student makeup wows crowd

Natalie Murphy nmurphy@foghornnews.com @foghorn_murphy Caitlynn Mitchell arrived at the Fine Arts Building three hours early to start applying her makeup for the 2 p.m. show. “I started working on my character right after Halloween. My fiancé upset me so I decided to make my character eat him,” Mitchell said. The class was tasked with not only creating a unique makeup design but also creating a full character with back-story and costume, said Shara Haghjoo, associate professor of drama. The class got off to a rocky start after Hurricane Harvey put everyone almost a month behind schedule. “This class was able…

A fond farewell to the Foghorn

Natalie Murphy nmurphy@foghornnews.com I am beyond sad that my time at the Foghorn News is coming to an end. I joined the paper unwittingly in fall ’16 when I changed my major after the loss of my son. I remember being so intimidated my first few days but that went away quickly. I was welcomed into the “family” and never looked back. The Foghorn News has been a place of healing for me after the loss of my son. I didn’t realize how much I needed to find a place like this until I was in the middle of it.…

The cost of no more net neutrality

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai recently announced that the federal government’s net neutrality rules will soon be no more, effectively messing up things for nearly every person in the United States. Net neutrality is the idea that all providers treat Internet data the same and keeps internet providers from messing with your internet and making it benefit themselves. This hypothetically would keep a provider like Spectrum, formerly Time Warner, from making its competitors’ websites slower or inaccessible. This also keeps Internet providers from charging more for select websites, blocking sites or apps entirely or slowing down your Internet at…

The name is. … Valdar

nmurphy@foghornnews.com Almost seven months to the day since the Viking landed at DMC, he has been named. Student Danielle Garza led the audience in DMC’s “Viking Thunder Clap,” then presented the Viking with his birthday gifts, the letters of his name in balloon form, at a Nov. 16 rally in the Harvin Center. One at a time large blue letter balloons appeared, spelling out “Valdar.” “The Viking has been a symbol of the school since 1939,” Garza said. According to Garza, Valdar means “mighty leader.” Alexandra Lasso, a health information technology major, is the student credited with the winning name…
