Clubs look to recruit at Rush Week

Del Mar home to nearly 60 Registered Student Organizations  Joseph Mapue used Rush Week to show students how they can help better humanity. Mapue, who has been a member of Del Mar’s Social Work Student Association for two years, has had a personal connection to the contributions the association does. “Last semester, I helped build water stations for migrants crossing over. It was very rewarding because you’re trying to prevent death and that alone is a humanitarian effort,” Mapue said. Late last year, the SWSA heard of immigrants dying from dehydration and wanted to help. Four members built three water…

Chicanas fight oppression then and now

You are a Chicano before you are a woman — at least many females felt that way during the early inception of the Chicano Movement, which ultimately led to the separation of Mexican-American women fighting for their rights independently from Chicanos. During the 1960s-70s many Mexican-Americans were fed up with the challenges they faced through political, economic and social injustices. The word “Mexican” was associated with the word “dirty.” People claim no respect, no status was given to them for how they looked and talked. “I hated being Mexican,” said Moctesuma Esparza in the documentary “Chicano! The History of the…

Sexual harassment protections in place

Del Mar, Collegiate officials ready to investigate complaints A Collegiate High School senior says she recently was verbally and sexually harassed by a Del Mar College student on the East Campus, saying the Del Mar student requested sexual favors from her. With Del Mar College being a nontraditional school and housing Collegiate High School, students from various age groups are contained together on one campus. The process for sexual harassment investigations varies slightly for each. “We need to educate our students on how you don’t have to be nice but you don’t have to be rude if some strange person…

Danyelle Green was given the occupation “business administrator” and a gross annual salary of $50,000 at the Coastal Community and Teachers Credit Union 4 Reality fair for high school students. Green, a senior at Collegiate High School, plans to have a business of her own one day and was given the opportunity to live her future, at least the average expenses. “I’m halfway through the fair and I’m pretty much almost out of money. I hope this is not realistic, Green said jokingly while walking through the stations. Seniors at Collegiate walked around to different booths that were presented by…

Civil War and Reconstruction in Coastal Bend

Although the Reconstruction era in America took place nearly 153 years ago, it still remains a significant part of history. The known antebellum South had little in common with antebellum Nueces County and the Coastal Bend area remained nearly undeveloped until after the Civil War. When Corpus Christi was settled in the 1830s it became one of the larger cities in the region, at the time with 175 residents. By 1860 the city held 2,906 people, and the economy depended on open-range grazing of cattle and sheep, according to Randolph B. Campbell’s article “Reconstruction in Nueces County.” A total of…

Students learn about other cultures

Mia Estrada mestrada@foghornnews.com Collegiate High School’s second annual Culture Fest showcased cultures not just from students’ native countries, but also LGBTQ+ and drag culture. Jeva Adame, a Collegiate High School senior, explored through the countries and recognized each one. “It’s good to be exposed to other cultures, and I recognize the effort our school is making by having this annual tradition,” Adame said. “The festival brings light to all cultures and is a good place to educate one another.” The festival was put on by Model United Nations and Culture Club. Volunteers wore traditional wear and brought customary food that…

Slabs and rods replace empty lot

Mia Estrada mestrada@foghornnews.com Construction for the General Academic and Music Building Phase 2 project has been well on its way, with a few unexpected delays. Electrical infrastructure issues were traced back to where the old English building used to be, which led to workers rerouting the infrastructure. “There were unforeseen underground conditions with piping for stormwater sanitary sewers, and electrical IT infrastructure,” said Michael Armbruster, project manager of Bartlett Cocke & Beecroft. English Professor Veronica Pantoja is excited for the building, especially because employees were asked to look at designs and give requests. “It sounds beautiful, especially for the indoor/outdoor…

They verbally abused her, telling her she should have never been born, Flores said at the Collegiate High School civic fair, Speak Up, Speak Out. “Later that day she told me goodbye and gave me the biggest hug and said she would see me later,” Flores said while…
