With October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the MeToo Movement is still on the rise. Women across the globe suffer from domestic violence and even sexual assault every day and today, women are saying enough. The MeToo Movement was founded in 2006 by Tarana Burke. The movement was originally for women of color that are survivors of sexual violence, helping them to, “find pathways to healing,” according to the MeToo website. Women were afraid to say anything and make accusations against their assaulter but to Burke, that had to change. I asked around the campus and ran into several people…

Flu season is quickly approaching, and, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 5 to 20 percent of Americans catch the disease every year. One way to prevent getting the flu is to get a flu shot. Flu shots are available at just about every retail pharmacy across America, even those located inside grocery stores. Many doctors offices administer flu shots as well. Most insurance companies will cover a flu shot in its entirety at a retail pharmacy but there are some that require patients receive their shot from their doctor’s office. If you are uninsured or have…
Scores shine the light on hard work at Collegiate, Branch Corpus Christi’s two early college campuses were its highest-performing high schools in 2017-18, according to the Texas Education Agency. Collegiate High School earned an overall score of 97, while the Harold T. Branch Academy for Career and Technical Education received a 95. “I think what’s important is what’s behind the scores. I think it’s important that people recognize and understand all the variables that compose that score and that a score is just face value, but the work behind the score is probably the most important,” said Tracie Rodriguez, director…
Let’s face the facts: college, work and life are stressful. Often, this stress can lead to depression or even thoughts of self-harm or suicide, especially in college students. There are alternative ways to deal with stress though, some even as close as your own home. One of the most popular ways to deal with stress is yoga or meditation. Meditation can be done practically anywhere and as often as needed. It allows the body and mind to relax and causes the stress to melt away. There is no one specific way to meditate. Some people prefer to focus on a…
New additions to the campus are almost ready for students By this time next year, students will likely have another 127,000 square feet of learning space with the new General Academic/Music Building Phase II. Construction of the $46 million building began in summer 2017 after the demolition of the English Building. Since then, students have been limited to the perimeter of the construction zone when getting to and from class. With the work also eliminating about 100 parking spaces, Del Mar College last year introduced Viking Stops, where a golf cart will pick up students in lots by the…
National Suicide Prevention Week aims to heal After a summer of several high-profile suicides, Del Mar College hopes to spread awareness as it host the fourth annual Suicide Prevention Symposium of the Coastal Bend. The event, to be held Sept. 13-14 during National Suicide Prevention Week, aims to “let individuals know that there are resources for individuals with suicidal ideation and what steps they can take to help others in need,” said DMC counselor Johanna Torres. Under Texas Senate Bill 1624, students entering any academic institution must be informed of information regarding mental health and suicide prevention services. DMC counselors…
Del Mar students take a Pledge of Civility and enjoy a slice of pizza Respect and common courtesy are among the topics that will be discussed at this year’s fifth annual “Speak Your Peace” event. With competition for jobs growing, Del Mar College hopes to expand students’ future employment skills through a new class. Students in the Learning Frameworks class will focus on problem solving, communication skills and learning how to present themselves to potential employers. “All these skills are very transferable into the workplace,” said Christine Lamb, instructor of Student Success and founder of the new course. The skills taught in the class will give students an advantage to get their foot in the door, Lamb said. “We don’t oftentimes get to pick where we are working, or who we are working with,” she…
