Speedy Ortiz gives the feedback

Raul Alonzo /Reporter  Along with Big Ups, Pile, Microphonic and the Denim Hares, the spring break show held at the NASA on March 9 also included the rising talent of Massachuesetts rockers, Speedy Ortiz. Coming off a busy 2013, in which their debut LP Major Arcana was featured on music blog Pitchfork’s top 50 albums as well as Setereogum’s annual Gummy awards, the band had just wrapped up a tour of Europe before playing Corpus Christi for the first time. Via conference call, drummer Mike Falcone and, later, guitarist/vocalist Sadie Dupuis spoke with the Del Mar College Foghorn prior to…

Cassidy’s plans big block party for St. Patrick’s Day

By Kira Hays / Reporter Keeping the St. Patrick’s Day tradition alive, Cassidy’s Irish Pub co-owner Michael Treiber is pulling out all the stops for this year’s Cassidy’s St. Patrick’s Day Block Festival. “It all started because, on St. Patrick’s Day, the pub would be at max capacity at 5 p.m. and we had to turn a lot of people away,” Treiber said. “That’s when I decided we needed to expand. We did, and now this year is going to be the biggest yet.“

The Marvelous Wonderettes

By Kira Hays / Reporter Four high school girlfriends with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts attend their long-awaited prom in “The Marvelous Wonderettes,” which opens March 7 at the Aurora Arts Theatre. As the show progresses, we learn that even though these four girls are very close friends, certain secrets surface during the dance that cause quite a ruckus. Director Victor Garcia said…

Tacos With Tera and the Salsa Señorita – Tommy Chong

By Tera Elwell / Web editor While I normally meet up with bands for good tacos and great conversation, I couldn’t pass up the chance to interview Tommy Chong over the phone. Chong, one half of famed comedy duo Cheech & Chong, was in L.A. but will visit Corpus Christi in April for the pair’s Up in Smoke comedy tour with the band WAR. While no bong hits were involved in the making of this interview – at least on our part – he had us cracking up anyway. Tera: Our first question is, where’s Cheech? Chong: Good question. He’s actually…

Rising Punk band joins Spring Break lineup

By Raul Alonzo Jr. / Reporter If amateur recordings found on YouTube are any testament, then close-quarter shows seem to be as natural an environment as any for a band like Big Ups. The resulting collaboration between four friends who met in the NYU music technology program, Big Ups will bring their brand of abrasive, high-energy, post-hardcore, noise rock drenched in drear and resentment to the very close-quarter, underground, Corpus Christi venue The NASA (formerly known as Studio B) on March 9. The spring break bash is being put together by Record Tree Production and Promotion. Having come out with their…
