Professors finish second book on math
Two Del Mar professors are helping pave the way for a better approach to passing the math TSI test. Andrea Johnson and Elsa Brown, both instructors of mathematics, released their second book in January. “TSI Math Made Easy” is a self-help study book that was about five years in the making. “We started noticing a big need, especially around us here at Del Mar,” Brown said. “Eighty percent of incoming freshmen were scoring at the lowest level for remedial math and only 1.7 percent of them were graduating. To put that in perspective: If there’s 3,000 incoming freshman, only 51…
Regents approve plan for campus
The Del Mar College Board of Regents at its February meeting selected three applicants to interview for the vacant at-large position, unanimously approved the Southside Campus and said goodbye to longtime Regent Trey McCampbell. “I’ve only served for four years with Trey McCampbell. I am a longtime friend, admirer and colleague,” Regent Carol A. Scott said. “He’s served for 14 years as regent and a decade as chair. He brought passion, intelligence, commitment, dedication and organizational skills to the board. It’s with fondness and deep regret we say goodbye.” “Is this a roast party?” McCampbell said. The board and…

Thank you, DMC, for giving me a start
There’s a lot to be said about my time as a Viking. From the long hours spent in the journalism lab to sloppy wet kisses that could be received from Fred the dog, Del Mar provided a community I grew to love. Everyone can relate to the feeling of being stuck, not knowing where you’re going or what your next course of action is. That’s how I entered Del Mar. Through the various classes and professors I was introduced to, I was given opportunities that I never knew existed for me. I am a public relations major who didn’t have…
Oh, the places we’ll go, together
The last four years of my life have been dedicated to academics and all the studying that comes with it. It sounds horrible, I know, but my life changed for the better when I decided to attend Collegiate High School. As a middle schooler, I really didn’t know what Collegiate was or of the nature of the school. However, I applied because I heard it was small and offered a lot of opportunities and at that time in my life I was being bullied by a group of kids and wanted to get away from that atmosphere. It scared me…
This is Jonny G., logging off…
What can I say about my six years at Del Mar College and my time spent with the Foghorn News staff? Well, it’s safe to say that I finally have made it through the end of this long crazy journey that I call college life. It was like it was almost yesterday when I was approached by my adviser Robert Muilenburg to join the staff back in fall 2012 after being impressed by my photos and writing reviews for the Foghorn. After accidentally leaking out Liam Hemsworth’s fate in “Expendables 2,” I immediately thought to myself, “Ok, I think after…
Me, my trench coat will be sorely missed
My time here at this institution has certainly been a new experience. I was homeschooled my entire life because of my father’s work and the possibility we may not stay in one place very long. However, my time here at Del Mar allowed me to explore what I wanted to do with my life and do so in a more social environment. Initially starting as an English writing major, I developed my writing skills and was directed to the Foghorn News as a possible outlet. It was here that my passion for writing became a passion for news writing and…
Employers look to hire at Del Mar
College holds event on both East and West campus Human resources coordinator Chelsea Bosworth eagerly awaited the waves of students looking to apply for a job at Del Mar College. “It’s nice when we have students engaged. They bring their resume and excel in life,” Bosworth, who works at the Texas State Aquarium, said at the college’s April 10 job fair on East Campus. Del Mar Career Development Center hosted the job fair in partnership with Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend. A second job fair was held the following day at West Campus. More than a dozen employers were…
