DMC kicks off Fall semester intramurals

Del Mar College’s Intramurals department, responsible for on-campus sports and athletics, is about to launch their Fall 2024 season. Multiple sports will be offered this semester.

“Flag football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, fun runs, weekly backyard events, Zumba, water aerobics, and more,” are among the sports set said Intramurals director Carla Gamez-Vela.

On top of sports, the department also offers free recreational activities for the student body.

“We also have a fully equipped fitness center with weights, cardio machines, tennis courts, indoor pool, racquetball courts, fitness classes, all free of charge,” Gamez-Vela said.

The weight room, tennis courts, fitness center, gymnasium, racquetball courts, and pool are all available at different hours of the day. All hours can be found at delmar.edu/offices/kinesiology/facilities.html.

Along with recreational activities, the department is also hiring.

“We always have paid opportunities for students to come join our fabulous team in the gym,” Gamez-Vela said.

The department is also offering positions that require no experience with sports.

“Some of positions we have are office assistants, marketing assistants, social media specialists, sports officials, graphic designers, and event planners to name a few,” Gamez-Vela said.

To celebrate the upcoming schedule, the department will be holding its third annual kick-off skate party at SK8LAND at 10829 Leopard St. later in September.

“I think I can say that the skate park is now a traditional event to kick off the intramural event season,” Gamez-Vela said.

The Fall 2024 skate party is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 19 from 7-9 p.m.

The fall semester’s schedule can be located elsewhere in this newspaper.

To RSVP for the skate party, or for any comments or questions concerning the Intramurals department and its offerings, reach out to Dr. Gamez-Vela at 361-698-1373 or cgamez@delmar.edu, or stop by her office at G108.

“I am very excited for this fall semester 2024,” Gamez-Vela said.

“We have an amazing student body and community that keeps us wanting to offer more every semester!”
