My blue heart is now bleeding red

Lexy Garcia / Reporter Election Day was tough. Nationally, the climate for Republicans to gain control of the Senate was ideal, and in step with history. And locally, not one Democrat won office in Nueces County. In what is supposed to be one of the most liberal counties in Texas, only after Travis County (Austin), Democratic voters didn’t show up. Initially, the sting was harsh and discouraging; my past six months on the Wendy Davis campaign felt for naught and I felt very small. Davis’ defeat was personal. Partially because she fought for such personal rights, but also because within Davis’…

Don’t bash social media activism

Midori Allen / Reporter Our generation has always been known to be addicted to technology. Most of us have our social media readily available on our phone, computer, tablets, televisions and even refrigerators now. I can admit I have an account for most common social medias that are available (you know, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram), and I know that when breaking news happens social media is the first place I turn to get information. With these giant networking platforms we have an easy way to try to make a difference. But trying to make a difference and being active is sadly…

Local voter turnout disappoints

On Nov. 4, barely one in three Americans fulfilled their responsibility and made it to the voting booths at their local precincts; however, it seems the rest of America’s eligible voters did not go out to make a difference for themselves and their community. According to The New York Times, fewer than 37 percent of eligible voters nationwide voted. “This has to be the lowest voter turnout since 1942 where only 33.9 percent had voted,” the Times reported. Voter turnout in midterm elections is traditionally lower than in years with a general election. But 2014 was particularly low, down 5…

Students must weigh happiness, financial security Vivien Sanchez / Reporter According to an article titled “More than Job Satisfaction,” State of the American Workplace reports 70 percent of American workers are either “not engaged” or “actively disengaged” in their work. This means these workers have “checked out.” They are going through the day-to-day motion with no passion behind what they do.  Brent D. Rosso, Ph.D., says finding meaning in one’s work has been shown to increase motivation, engagement, empowerment, career development, job satisfaction, individual performance and personal fulfillment. Happiness at Work, Psychology Today, says we work more than 90,000 hours during…

Fifth floor of White Library reopens after bee infestation

Weeklong shutdown affects several events Meagan Falcon / Reporter Bees are insects we are all way too familiar with. They help pollinate the flowers and give us honey. We need bees to live, but not to live on the fifth floor of the White Library. On Oct. 13, the White Library’s fifth floor was infested with honeybees and students were not allowed on the floor for their safety for a week until maintenance finally gave the thumbs up on Oct. 20 to open up the floor to students; however, for safety precautions the floor wasn’t opened to students until Oct. 21.…
