  Shayna Sands Reporter Cecy Trevino, a local musician and member of the all-girl band The Knockouts, successfully brought a new and unique music program to Corpus Christi. Chicas Rock is a program just for girls who are aspiring to be musicians. The group is dedicated to building girls’ self-esteem through music performance and creation. Formed in 2009, the camp started in a large one-room space located above Produce, another locally owned business that contributes to art, music and culture in Corpus Christi. State legislators proposes medical marijuana

  C. Robert Gonzalez Reporter   On Jan. 23, state Sen. Kevin Eltife, R-Tyler, and Rep. Stephanie Klick, R-Fort Worth, worked together in a joint effort to file new bills with regards to the use of medical marijuana in Texas. Senate Bill 339 and House Bill 892 are being referred to as The Texas Compassionate Use Act. The new proposed bills follow the December 2014 filing of House Bill 507 by state Rep. Joe Moody, D-El Paso. Moody’s proposed bill, HB507, is cut and dry to the respect that it would change current Texas law regarding the possession of marijuana.…

But unlike other reference librarians, Berecka, who works in the White Library on Del Mar College’s East Campus, is an “accidental poet.” “I started writing poetry when I heard Rudyard Kipling’s ‘If’ read to NFL highlights when I was in high school,” said Berecka, who said he read little poetry if any before that moment. “Poetry was my release and was much cheaper than therapy.” Berecka’s poetry contains stories of his childhood that are lighthearted and funny yet emotional. Scholarships can ease financial burden

  Steven Martinez Reporter   As the new semester starts to kick into high gear, the last thing on many students’ minds is how they are going to pay for their continuing education. But thanks to a wealth of scholarships and financial aid, students can easily apply for (practically) free money. “This academic year we processed and awarded over $1.3 million,” said Elsie Odon, scholarship coordinator for the DMC Center for Economic Development.
