Nursing students to hold dementia tour

Nursing assistant students in Del Mar’s continuing education program will help people experience what it is like to have dementia through the use of special goggles, shoes and headphones on Feb. 24. The virtual dementia tour was an annual event before the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Donna Huddleston, lead nurse planner at the Center for Economic Development. Safety precautions have been implemented for its return this year, Huddleston said. “There are new changes with the tour due the pandemic as opposed to years in the past, which include special covers for the headset and altered tasks that can help people…

Born in Corpus Christi on Aug. 26, 1999, Christopher Garcia always loved the idea of working with a team to accomplish a goal. Throughout his youth, it was the passion he had to be a professional soccer player that motivated him to be the best version of himself. However, as time ticked on, he found new passions and excitements, such as building computers, to keep him focused and honed in on his studies. Garcia, a business administration and management major, plans to graduate with an associate degree from Del Mar in summer 2022 before continuing his undergraduate education at Texas…

Future bright for welding student

Even though Joe Cruz was born with just one hand, he learned early on in life he could accomplish anything he set his mind too.  “I never felt different until I was learning to tie my shoes,” Cruz said. “Trying to tie my shoes was the first time I realized I had to figure things out on my own and find different ways to learn these skills.”  Cruz said his parents have always been “a part of my life when it comes to encouragement.” He said his parents have always pushed him to overcome obstacles and not let anything hold…

Finals are heating up for firefighting cadets

With finals season here, one group of Del Mar College students found themselves in the line of fire rather than with a blue book and No. 2 pencil in front of them.  Ten cadets with the Del Mar College Regional Fire Academy on Nov. 17 underwent one of the tests required by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection, which is part of DMC’s program completion requirements as well. The cadets were tasked with extinguishing three types of gas fires: a liquefied petroleum gas tank, a burning car and a dumpster fire.  Dressed in full firefighting gear, cadets found themselves working…

Bachelor of Science in Nursing underway

For students in Del Mar’s new Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, balancing studies with their full-time jobs as nurses isn’t without its challenges — or rewards.  With BSN becoming a preferred credential in health care today, DMC started offering the bachelor’s degree this fall.  Because it is new, DMC has ensured that they gain feedback from students in the program and plan to continue shaping the program for all students’ needs and education.  “The student/instructor interactions have been positive. Faculty have extended extra availability to students as well as flexibility, to help with challenging student work schedules,” said Jennifer…
