Gaining citizenship with a steady job and education

Any immigrant who wants to be a U.S citizen has to go through a lengthy process with testing and background checks. Over the years it has gotten worse to the point that immigrants who want to be U.S citizens have to wait years to become one, and often they live in the U.S. and keep having to visit the embassy or immigration services within the city to renew their stay. Many immigrants begin to build their life here by attending college and starting a job. They are legally able to be in the United States but are not considered a…

Dual credit prepares high school students for college

I first heard about Collegiate High School when I was in the fifth grade and was immediately captivated by the opportunities it provided. I applied for CHS when I was 14 years old, and took my first dual credit class that same year. Balancing a demanding college course load with equally demanding high school classes was overwhelming, stressful and something I was not prepared for. However, what I gained was worth more than I ever could’ve anticipated. As I progressed through the program, I took on even more classes, which varied in both difficulty and demand. Now, I am a…

If Uber has nothing to hide, what’s the big deal?

Taxi services have been around for quite a while and they do come in handy, like when getting to the airport or even if you have had too much to drink. They are reliable but can be expensive. That is when Uber steps in as an alternate to a taxi service that can come to your location with a tap of an app. Uber started in Paris in 2008 and is an app that allows the user to contact an Uber driver to come pick them up at their location. The app includes an estimate of how much it may…

Candidates’ antics affect registered voters’ decisions

Ronald Reagan lived by a philosophy that many Republicans live by, “Thou shall not speak ill of a fellow Republican.” Though if you were to tune into a national news station like Fox News, CNN or ABC that are covering the election, on the Republican side it does not seem that they follow Reagan’s philosophy, even though they claim to follow his ideology on how to run the country like the way he dealt with the economy. Many people look at their TVs and think that this election season is a political circus with Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio…

Corpus Christi having no drinking ban spells danger

On Feb. 17, the Port Aransas City Council voted to ban drinking on the beach between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m. this Spring Break. This decision was a good move on their part since the beaches in Port Aransas are notorious for getting wild and crazy over the break. This new rule this will reduce the accidents and underage drinking there. But on Feb. 18, it was announced that Corpus Christi beaches, including the one downtown, would not be affected by the drinking ban. This is a disaster waiting to happen for number of reasons. Google Corpus Christi beaches will not be affected with a drinking curfew…

Local elections are where the people matter

March 1 kicks off the election season with primary voting. The general elections follow this November, and the presidential candidates are taking all the attention. This is choosing the most powerful leader in the free world, so understandably there is a certain level of excitement for this. The national elections are not where our vote has the biggest impact— that comes from the local elections. Our local elections are where our vote has the most impact, and it’s where we elect the people who decide what is best for us on a day-to-day basis. A&M-CC move means no tenure for some educators

My copy of The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language defines the word pap as “something lacking real value or substance and considered to be unsuitable for the minds of adults.” The administration of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has added a new variation on this definition with its adoption of the faculty position of Professional Assistant Professor — a title for which the acronym “PAP” is commonly used on campus. In short, the position of Professional Assistant Professor or PAP has many features of traditional faculty. Many, that is, except the ability to attain tenure, which is a vested…

Syrian refugees or American vets? Let’s help our own first.

With the issue of Syrian refugees a main topic in the news today, 31 states are holding strong to their opposition of letting them into the United States. Some leaders say they either oppose taking in any Syrian refugees being relocated as part of a national program or are asked that they be particularly scrutinized as potential security threats. In a letter to President Barack Obama, Gov. Greg Abbott said, “American humanitarian compassion could be exploited to expose Americans to similar deadly danger,” referring to the deadly attacks in Paris. Some would say that this is a ridiculous view of…

Refugees spur many concerns

Since the Paris attacks of Nov. 13, the world has come to the realization that ISIS is more serious than thought. The Syrian refugee crisis has escalated to the point that the United States is considering taking in refugees, but with the fear of ISIS infiltrating countries through the refugee crisis, governors in the U.S. are trying to make a stand against the president to not allow in refugees. Gov. Greg Abbott implored in his letter to the president on Nov. 16: “The threat posed to Texas by ISIS is very real. ISIS claimed credit last May when two terrorist…

Words speak louder than ramblings from a regent

Guy Watts is not favored for his comment about setting a campus aside for “unprepared” students. His comments on Del Mar College’s current mediocre campus encouraged him to speak further, basically requesting the students to accept a label that dictated their intelligence or “preparedness” for higher education. Students don’t pay for college classes to fail them. Some students need more help or need additional assistance outside of class, but that shouldn’t affect the syllabus or the professor’s curriculum. However, the current curriculum set for students may (or may not) be set to a minimal required understanding of the information throughout…
