Wrestlers raise money for community

Tera Elwell / Web editor Halloween Hijinx was an Oct. 25 fundraiser to support the nonprofit organization Homicide Survivors Support Group. “The victims of homicide aren’t just the people we’ve lost. It’s also the families that are left behind,” said Victory Pro Wrestling promoter Rolando Villarreal Jr. “This is a group I plan on supporting for the rest of my life.” VPW started because Villarreal wanted families to come closer together. “Growing up, it was the one thing we did together as a family,” Villarreal said. “Friday nights, my grandpa and I would stay up late watching wrestling on a…

Bump, set, spike it – that’s the way DMC likes it

More than 60 students participate in 4-on-4 volleyball league Carlos E. Gonzalez / Reporter It was a wonderful turnout for the four-on-four co-ed volleyball league. The league was three weeks long and started Sept. 29. The matches had no time limit and the first team to win two of three matches and make it to 25 would be victorious. A tiebreaker, if needed, would go to 15 points. There were over 60 participants on 10 teams in the league. “It was a great turnout. From all the leagues we had hosted, this had a lot more student participation,” said intramurals director…

Not too late to join challenge

Rilwan Sanusi / Reporter With the 100-Mile Challenge in full swing, Intramurals director Ryan Murphy is excited about the number of participants in the challenge. While fewer than 50 took part in the challenge last semester, 36 people have signed up so far for this year’s event, with several weeks left before the Dec. 3 deadline. “The 100-Mile Challenge is an appealing program due to motivating students to reach their goals,” Murphy said. “It keeps them moving beyond their limit and forms a catalyst that leads to a healthier and fitter lifestyle.” Murphy encouraged participants to turn in their log sheets…

Jeter proves he’s worthy of being in Hall of Fame

John Muguerza / Columnist Few players have transcended not just the game of baseball but sports in general the way Derek Jeter has. With athletes having to deal with so many more distractions in the modern age ranging from social media, relentless public criticism, death threats and around-the-clock media coverage, it’s a reminder that in today’s age nothing is off limits. But somehow Jeter has been able to maneuver through the distractions over his 20-year MLB career and the amazing part is that he has done it for only one team and in the most infamous city in America where the…

Comeback proves to be a game changer

Each team stepped up to the challenge to see who would be the last one standing as they competed for the title of the basketball tournament. Tiebreaker leads to ultimate victory

Carlos E. Gonzalez / Reporter Even though it looked to be a rainy day for intramurals, that didn’t keep Director Ryan Murphy from postponing the Ultimate Frisbee Tournament. Each team was co-ed and had as many as five players on the court. Each game was one round and six minutes long, while the championship was two rounds of five minutes each. The tournament was round-robin…

Goal: Dodge elimination

By Carlos E. Gonzalez / Reporter It’s another exciting semester for intramurals, and the dodgeball tournament held during the second week of school saw a large turnout. Six teams entered but two dominated the whole thing. Every team had a minimum of six players on the field, having to win best out of three for six rounds. Every game had the crowd on their feet from the start, though some teams were favored to take it all, like team MOB, other teams like the Average Joes and Regulators made it difficult for them. Eventually MOB would make it all the…
