See something, say something

Truckers target human trafficking Lynette Cervantes, a DMC truck driving instructor, remembers the day clearly. It was below freezing and she was sitting in her truck at a truck stop just outside Albany, New York. She was looking down into the eyes of a young girl in a short skirt and a flimsy coat. Cervantes had just been solicited by a young girl who was a prostitute. “I denied her company; however, I invited her into my truck so she could get warm but then she told me, ‘If you are not going to date me then I need to…

Slice of the Big Apple in South Texas

A local business offers a slice of New York and Italian cuisine to Corpus Christi, which is a marked difference from big food chains in the area. LENNON MENDIOLA Authentic New York Pizza is a unique treat and an excellent pizza stop. I had two four-cheese pizza slices and the display confused me for a moment because from personal experiences around Corpus Christi with pizza, which mostly revolve around food chain pizzas such as Pizza Hut, Little Caesars and such, seeing a thick cheese-covered slice of pizza was not in mind when ordering. As for the taste itself, each bite…

Many struggle as storm aid is denied

@BrittClaramunt bclaramunt@foghornnews.com When Del Mar student Crystal Arocha heard the Red Cross was offering $400 in assistance for Harvey victims, she hoped it would help her return to normal. Arocha, who works at a preschool in Rockport, won’t be able to return to work until late October because of damages. “I applied because I haven’t had a job since the hurricane hit, therefore haven’t had a source of income,” Arocha said. Many people face a similar situation. Unfortunately for Arocha and several like her, her request was denied and she must now appeal the decision. “I appealed and got denied…

‘Outlander’ returns with a third season

The theory on traveling back in time has not yet been discovered. However, in “Outlander,” traveling back in time may be as easy as walking through the stones at Craigh na Dun. “Outlander” is based on the eight book series by Diana Gabaldon. It’s about an English combat nurse, Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), from 1945 England who is mysteriously sent back in time to 1743 Scotland during the war between England and Scotland. In Scotland, she meets Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and begins her adventure to try to get back to her husband, Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies), in 1945. To…
