Senate candidates hit the Coastal Bend

Republican Sen. Ted Cruz and U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke, a Democrat, made a final swing through the Coastal Bend late last week to rally supporters. Polls show the two in a tight race in Texas, which hasn’t elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in 30 years. Foghorn News photographer Charlie Blalock attended both rallies. See his pictures in the gallery above.   And don’t forget, Tuesday is election day.

Local production looking for extras

Local independent filmmaker Taylor Rae Carmona is looking for extras and crew assistants for her second independent film production. The film is based on events that took place in Kingsville in the 1960s. The Spanish-language film spotlights Mexican-Americans in South Texas. “‘The Barrio Poet’ tells the story of two Mexican men that meet at a small bar and learn they are both fans of poetry and literature,” Carmona said. The film is on a micro-budget, so participants will not be paid. However, Carmona said, in exchange for participation, actors and crew members are offered final credit, craft services, digital access…

A long overdue season delivered

The man in the High castle season 3 After a two year hiatus, “The Man in The high Castle’s” third season was released on Oct 5. As one of Amazons Prime Videos most popular shows, the neo-noir dystopian sci-fi thriller provides an intrigue that is equally as disturbing as is it entertaining. Youths need to be educated about sex

Teaching our youth about sex is an age-old debate. When parents discuss talking to their teens about sex, words like taboo, religion and innocence are often thrown around. However, rates of sexually transmitted diseases in the United States have climbed for the fourth consecutive year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The schools have taken away the fear of STDs because they are no longer educating youths about them. They’ve turned sex into something teens shouldn’t do because it was decided for them by a committee that determined they are too young to know the truth. Only…

Cottonfest

The 34th Annual Cottonfest is a local event held yearly at the Richard M. Borchard Regional Fairgrounds. The event consisted of a BBQ cook-off, live music, food stands, stand-up comedy, etc. Although it started off as a small local event, it has grown into something bigger than anyone ever imagined. “I remember when we only needed one small table full of judges for the cook-off, and this year we needed seven tables,” BBQ event coordinator Jason Garcia said. The cook-off drew in many teams this year due to other nearby events getting called off. Sixty-eight teams competed which is the…

Your gender is your credit

Gender roles, when it comes to sexual assault, have become a double standard, with women too often portrayed as irrational and men as brave souls. For a current example, Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearing was delayed after allegations brought forward by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford of her sexual assault that took place 36 years ago. It’s wrong to think that Kavanaugh would be questioned as equally as if it were Dr. Ford sitting in his seat herself. As I was able to see on C-SPAN, that is not the case. The Judiciary Committee’s ranking member, Dianne Feinstein, started…

Taking a stance Nike just did it

For the past 30 years, Nike has worked to cement its slogan, “Just Do It,” into American culture. It represents itslef with the best of the best in sports. Professional athletes such as tennis player Serena Williams and New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. can be seen representing Nike in countless campaigns. To celebrate 30 years of business, Nike released an ad campaign with NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick with the caption, “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything,” placed across Kaepernick’s face. The ad stirred many emotions as loyal customers of the brand could then…

Media’s role is crucial

With the semester about to start the Foghorn editors thought it would be a great idea to say what we’re all about. As a crucial and well-known voice of the campus we have made it our goal to share our mission with you, our valued audience. The Foghorn is composed of writers, editors and photographers trying to be the voice of…
