Students, teachers to be recognized

They say the pen is mightier than the sword, but finding a way to utilize it can be the difficult part. Some students took the extra initiative and now are being honored in Del Mar College’s 65th annual Recognition Day Ceremony at 6 p.m. April 21 at Richardson Performance Hall on East Campus. The college will honor individuals listed in “Who’s Who Among Community College Students,” the College’s Outstanding Academic Students in each department, East and West Campus Teachers of the Year and also the 2016 Hall of Fame inductees. There are 150 students to be honored this year, with…

Grab a slice of Italy here in Corpus Christi

Pizza is one of the greatest creations for a struggling college student. It is fairly inexpensive and lasts for a few meals. With that in mind and a craving for cheese in our stomachs, we set out to review two of Corpus Christi’s most popular pizza hangouts, Pizza State and B&J’s Pizza. Gabriel Myers/Foghorn A large pepperoni and crispy bacon bits is served hot and fresh at B&J’s Pizza. The restaurant also serves sandwiches, burgers, fries and ice cold beers. SAMANTHA DOUTY I wanted to go to a pizza place fairly close to campus, so I decided to go to…

Collaboratory lab holds grand opening

The Collaboratory lab was meant to be an open and safe place for students to receive tutoring, but even before the lab had its April 6 grand opening, it had already become something more. “I had no place to study,” lab assistant Victoria Gonzales said. “I walked up here and now this is like my second home.” Students who frequently visit know that walking in, they’ll be met by a team of their peers, ready to help. Adriana King/Foghorn Jerry Young (from left), Richard Trongson, Michael Martinez, Juan Chavez, Victoria Gonzales and Brian Hill socialize at the Collaboratory lab’s grand…

Demolition process under way

Veronica Barrera/Foghorn A demolition crew begins tearing down the Corner Market. The property was purchased for $550,000. It is located by the CED building on South Staples Street. In August 2015 the Board of Regents approved the purchase of property at 3201 S. Staples St. for plans to clean up the area. The property, near the college’s Center for Economic Development at the corner of South Staples and Kostoryz, was once a gas station and convenience store. The location was worn down and had broken-down vehicles overgrown grass and old tires. The property was purchased for $550,000. The cleanup work…

Dual credit benefits us all

For growing numbers of students, dual credit is a vital part of the Del Mar College experience. This service gives high school students the opportunity to get ahead in their college careers. In the 2014-15 fiscal year, DMC reported a $2.1 million loss in relation to dual credit classes. Dual credit students pay $99.99 for a three-hour course. A traditional student pays $353 for the same course. Despite the loss, President Mark Escamilla recently told the Foghorn that the college has no plans to raise the rate. Simply put, the benefits outweigh the cost. The purpose of the dual credit…

Collaboratory lab offers more than tutoring

There was little to no fanfare when the learning lab the Collaboratory opened last semester, almost a year after the idea was proposed. The lab was set up to be a functional and comfortable place for students to work and receive help with their harder subjects, particularly those in the STEM field. Now after about half a year of operating, the lab has accumulated a plethora of useful tools and equipment for students and is finally ready for a grand opening. Any student with a Del Mar College ID can enter the modern-looking lab, located on the third floor of…

Time to give Uber a shot

Whether male or female, someone under the influence of alcohol would rather wake up and know they made the right choice by calling for a designated driver to pick them up. It’s also comforting, during the process of waiting and riding with the driver, to know who they are and how much you’re expected to pay. Let’s face it, there’s nothing worse than waking up only to realize you spent more than you remember spending. Uber, probably to be followed by Lyft, pulled out of Corpus Christi after the Council tried to enforce regulations including fingerprint scanning. Uber, for example,…

Drama leads to higher turnout at polls

There’s no doubt that this year’s primaries had a large voter turnout compared with 2014, but why is that? Why has there been a resurgence in exercising the public’s civic duty? Some 51,452 ballots were cast in this year’s primaries in Nueces County, while only 21,108 were cast in 2014. It’s thought the reason for the high turnout has to do with the presidential races, which held great appeal for Texas voters because the state’s primary held more sway in big-ticket national races than it has in previous years. According to the records in the Nueces County Courthouse, 27.3 percent…

Stop fishing for flavor – we found it

In honor of Lent the Foghorn staff chose to sample the different fish sandwiches at fast-food restaurants. We chose to review the Filet-O-Fish from McDonald’s and the Whatacatch from Whataburger. JONATHAN GARCIA I was in the mood for a fish sandwich after class, so I ventured out to McDonald’s near East Campus. Since it is nearby I decided to walk, and I couldn’t wait to try the Filet-O-Fish. They have a special for the sandwich for Lent but I set out to see if this is a sandwich not just for Lent, but also a sandwich you can eat anytime.…
