Thank you for (not) smoking

SGA discusses whether campus smoke ban is necessary By Tera Elwell / Web editor Smoking on campus — to ban it, or not to ban it? That was the main topic discussed during the Student Government Association’s Feb. 26 meeting. Professor Billy Long, chairman of the Faculty Council, along with SGA members, debated the pros and cons of having a smoke-free campus or possibly having designated smoking areas. City ordinance states all smoking should occur at least 10 feet away from the doors of a building or any walkway that people would have to directly use. However, students and faculty members often…

Rising Punk band joins Spring Break lineup

By Raul Alonzo Jr. / Reporter If amateur recordings found on YouTube are any testament, then close-quarter shows seem to be as natural an environment as any for a band like Big Ups. The resulting collaboration between four friends who met in the NYU music technology program, Big Ups will bring their brand of abrasive, high-energy, post-hardcore, noise rock drenched in drear and resentment to the very close-quarter, underground, Corpus Christi venue The NASA (formerly known as Studio B) on March 9. The spring break bash is being put together by Record Tree Production and Promotion. Having come out with their…

Tacos With Tera and the Salsa Squad – The Blind Owls

By Tera Elwell / Web Editor  For this Tacos With Tera interview, I decided to take a few fans with me to meet The Blind Owls. Staff members Kaliegh Benck, Midori Allen and Raul Alonzo joined me for chips and salsa, good conversation and a gnarly photo shoot afterward. Jesse De Los Santos (guitar/vocals), Carlos Garcia (dance machine, aka bass/vocals) and Joshua De Leon (guitar/vocals) met us at Taqueria El Alteño, off Gollihar and Staples. Dylan Romel (drums) was unable to attend due to his busy work schedule. Kaliegh: You’re playing at SXSW this year. How’d it go last year? Carlos: Last…

Artist Leonard Lehrer gives insight at Del Mar

Boston native draws inspiration from his youth By Amber Quaid / Reporter International artist Leonard Lehrer recently shared his artwork with Del Mar College students and staff in his personal “grand tour” lecture. His lecture, titled “Observations on My Personal Grand Tour,” took the audience through his life and the artwork that was inspired through his experiences. Lehrer grew up in Boston and fell in love with baseball and art. Every chance he had he would wait at the stadium and collect the signatures of the baseball players. As he grew older he realized he wasn’t good at baseball and ventured…

Tacos With Tera – At My Signal

By Tera Elwell / Web Editor  Although I have only known about At My Signal for a little over a year, the group has been together since 2011. I was drawn to them after seeing them perform at Zeros Hard Rock Club. They sounded amazing and really got the crowd moving. I asked the guys where they wanted to meet for some Sunday morning tacos and they picked Taqueria El Altiño, across the street from Del Mar College’s East Campus. I sat down with two members of the five-piece metal band, Joe Wilmot (vocals) and Gil Gomez (lead guitar). Cassie Trevino (guitar) was unable to join…

‘Your Corpus is showing’ takes off

Slogan meant to be positive, say its creators By Kira Hays / Reporter When Korbin “Boomer” Matthews and Melanie Granado had the idea to put a slogan representing their hometown on a T-shirt, they never thought anyone would actually want to buy one. “We didn’t start it with the intention to necessarily market it so much considering we started small and crossed our fingers that maybe a couple of people will like it, or a couple of people will wear it around town, and then maybe in the future other people would want it,” Matthews said. “We didn’t realize that it would jump-start the way…

Going from idle to ‘Idol’

Corpus Christi man headed to Hollywood for reality TV show By Kaliegh Benck / Editor-in-chief Corpus Christi native Justin Fira has recently been the talk of the town, but it’s not exactly something he’s shying away from. “I’ve actually been interviewed by a couple of people since the season premiere aired,” said Fira, 25. With the airing of the season 13 auditions of “American Idol” from Austin, Fira has received copious amounts of publicity and he’s taking advantage of every ounce of it. While the clip of Fira singing and playing guitar to Maroon 5’s hit “This Love” displayed a confident and collected attitude, the journey…

Del Mar plans KEDT studio and FEMA dome By Joshua Johnson-White / Reporter Adding to the recent buzz of the East Campus renovation of the Fine Arts music building, Del Mar College has several upcoming projects in the works.
