Shrimp Crostini perfection

A long, long time ago I was friends with a wonderful man named Charlie. Charlie owned Luciano’s Italian Restaurant on Alameda. It’s since been sold to new owners. Throughout, I had the absolute best time getting to explore the restaurant behind the scenes. Charlie would often laugh at my choice of favorite Italian meal. I was very predictable choosing the chicken parmesan every time I ate Italian. However, he soon made a rule that I couldn’t order the same thing twice. I began exploring the menu and trying things that were out of my comfort zone, things like veal and…

Drama Dept. presents ‘Twentieth Century’

Railway comedy delivered nonstop laughs on-stage Del Mar’s Fall production, “Twentieth Century,” was the Drama Department’s masterful undertaking at whisking its audience to a Depression-era setting, while also displaying what travel was like aboard the famous Twentieth Century express train. The play, an adaptation of a script written by Ben Hecht and Charles McArthur, concluded its run at the Finley Theatre on Nov. 17. The production, set in the 1930s aboard the train en route from Chicago to New York City, provided stylish entertainment with heavy doses of humor, as it centered on a despairing and nearly broke Broadway director…

Keep the holidays happy for everyone

Everyone has had the awkward feeling of seeing someone they know out in public and having about five seconds to determine if you’re going to say “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays.” In most recent years there has become a huge consciousness of when it is appropriate to say “Merry Christmas” as to not offend anyone. The term has been coined as too religious, leading people to say that it is exclusive of other religions. One of the main places that we see this transition is in retail. It can be said that the premise of this argument is solely political…

Fighting for the right to write

In recent years the world has taken the art of newspapers and journalism and evolutionized it. The rapid decline of the newspaper industry has paved an upward path for a new type of news and media platform. Although the news/media outlet range has become wider, one thing stays the same and that is the journalism. The role of the reporter and of the press never changes, but only gets perfected. President Donald Trump has kept Americans out of the loop concerning many important topics. The press continues to ask simple and fair questions that the public lawfully has the right…

Students March to the Polls

The student Democratic Club hosted a non-partisan March to the Polls on Nov. 6. Students wielded homemade signs encouraging people to vote.   “The only purpose is to get people to cast their ballot on Election Day,” Laura Salinas, Democratic Club member, told the Foghorn News. Club members met outside the Harvin Center encouraging passing students to march too.  Stickers and information sheets were handed out. “It’s important to vote. Addiction studies major makes mums for center’s residents Kailey Wheatley, an addiction studies major, uses her crafting skills to make money. She often creates home decor, but specializes in making mums and garters at homecoming time. When Wheatley saw an opportunity to give back to the community, she took it. A worker at the Elan Corpus Christi Assisted Living and Memory Care facility in Corpus Christi recently asked for donation of used mums for the residents. Wheatley decided to make them new mums instead — for free. “I’m doing the job because I love old people in nursing homes because…

United We Stand, Divided We Fall

Liberty and justice for all. These words do not seem to hold much meaning these days. Most Americans take pride in how far the nation has come as a whole, but as religious and racial discrimination have come into focus in America again, America has come to a halt on the road to change. Today we have numerous Americans sitting in cells accused of committing hate crimes toward other ethnicities. There are Americans shooting down other Americans in synagogues, churches, mosques and more. A man named Robert Bowers was arrested in late October for shooting and killing 11…
