Lincoln-Reagan Dinner draws dozens of protesters

Mark Young myoung@foghornnews.com   There were two events happening at the Holiday Inn Marina on March 9. Inside was a fundraising dinner, called the Lincoln-Reagan Dinner, which was supposed to feature Gov. Gregg Abbott (he was not able to attend the event because of bad weather, but did address the crowd over Skype). Outside was a protest geared toward Abbott and his recent support of Senate Bill 6, the so-called “bathroom bill,” and Senate Bill 4, which aims to ban sanctuary cities in Texas. Nueces County Republican Chairman Mike Bergsma, and the president of Nueces County Republican Women, Jeanne…

Gender stereotypes addressed by faculty in workshop

Mark Young myoung@foghornnews.com   While society has become more progressive in the past decades, there are a lot of traditions and notions still present. Gender roles are one. “How do you define success?” That’s how Jerry Dugan, an education consultant at Christus Health and former Women’s Shelter community educator, began the March 9 faculty workshop called Breaking Out of the Gender Box. The workshop was aimed at helping faculty understand how gender roles affect students and how to help nontraditional students. The workshop went over common roles that men and women are “boxed” into and how it affects their future…

Manners, It’s what’s for dinner

Mark Young myoung@foghornnews.com A person with bad manners can leave a lasting impression on any number of important people. Whether it’s a date or a dinner with a possible boss, you don’t want to be rude or use bad manners. To combat this, the DMC Vikings Alumni and the Career Development Center sponsored an etiquette lunch at Del Mar. “The luncheon was a great opportunity for students to learn some vital skills that could come in handy in the future,” said Vanessa Adkins with the Career Development Center, who coordinated the March 6 luncheon. Adkins said the annual event only…

Beat the heat and grab a seat

Mark Young myoung@foghornnews.com With March being a prime time for blockbusters to be released, spring break is the perfect chance to catch a movie you’ve been hearing about for months. The new King Kong movie, “Kong: Skull Island,” starring Oscar winner Brie Larson and Tom Hiddleston comes out March 10, and looks to be a fun and thrilling action flick. The more family-oriented “Beauty and the Beast” will be premiering the following week on March 17 and with Emma Watson looks to be smash hit. “The Lego Batman Movie,” released in February, should still be at theaters for spring break…

“DMC changed my life.” Alumni speak about their DMC journey

Mark Young myoung@foghornnews.com A former Corpus Christi mayor says she wouldn’t be where she is today without Del Mar College. “Del Mar gave me the foundation I needed for the rest of my schooling and the rest of my life,” Nelda Martinez said Feb. 23 at the Your DMC Journey speaker series event. Martinez was one of several speakers at the event, which brought alumni back to share their stories. Omar Lopez, Denise Mugabe, Jennifer Gracia, Melinda Sioto and Bobbie Lopez also spoke. Food Festival offers community a chance to taste diversity

Mark Young myoung@foghornnews.com The Islamic Society of Southern Texas gave locals another chance to get a taste of their culture with the fourth annual International Food Festival. Hosted at a local mosque, the event was an opportunity for many to get a firsthand look at Muslim culture and how it varies. Featuring foods from over 10 countries in the Middle East and Asia, the festival also had a bazaar and activities for guests, such as a petting zoo and a rock wall, as well as a tour of the mosque and a question-and-answer session about Islam. Within the mosque, Imam…

Students look ahead to campus carry

Mark Young myoung@foghornnews.com   As community colleges prepare to allow students to carry concealed weapons on campus, many at Del Mar are split on the issue. Veronica Vasquez, a public relations and advertising major, said she believes “having guns will make people safer” and is for them on campus. However, she added that more should be done to make sure that the wrong people don’t have guns, such as more background checks. Allison Dozier, a junior at Collegiate High School, believes having more guns on campus will make things more dangerous and harder for students. “I don’t agree with having…

Dr. Nancy Vera shares stories of adversity

Mark Young myoung@foghornnews.com   Speaking to a room of hopeful teachers, Nancy Vera made one thing very clear: “Have a heart and make sure you want to help others. Education is the key to a quality life.” This mantra was well stressed throughout the hour-long speech Feb. 13, which was part of the Career Development Speaker Series to help Del Mar students plan for their future careers. To focus on teaching, the event brought Vera, president of the Corpus Christi American Federation of Teachers, the union that represents teachers in CCISD and the surrounding areas. This is one of the…

Safe Space, a new Del Mar club, will focus and support LGBT issues

Mark Young myoung@foghornnews.com   “Which one of you is the boy and which one of you is the girl?” If I had a dime for every time I heard that horrendous phrase I’d probably have enough money to pay for my college books. Instead, I’m just a poor gay man who has to hear ignorant phrases. In early fall of 2016, I attended a meeting focusing on LGBT issues at Del Mar for the Foghorn News. While I was pleasantly surprised at the inclusivity of Del Mar, I was upset at the fact that no one at Del Mar had…
