2022 summer and fall registration begins with rally

Del Mar is kicking off registration with a rally this week at both the Heritage and Windward campuses. The rally is for students planning to register for summer or fall 2022 courses. Students can take advantage of the rallies by being able to register early and not have to worry about last-minute registration. The rallies include food for those attending and games where students can win prizes such as a Del Mar T-shirt when they show rally hosts their finalized schedule for their upcoming semester. “Registering early is a great way for our Vikings to secure their schedules at the…

Future bright for welding student

Even though Joe Cruz was born with just one hand, he learned early on in life he could accomplish anything he set his mind too.  “I never felt different until I was learning to tie my shoes,” Cruz said. “Trying to tie my shoes was the first time I realized I had to figure things out on my own and find different ways to learn these skills.”  Cruz said his parents have always been “a part of my life when it comes to encouragement.” He said his parents have always pushed him to overcome obstacles and not let anything hold…

Finals are heating up for firefighting cadets

With finals season here, one group of Del Mar College students found themselves in the line of fire rather than with a blue book and No. 2 pencil in front of them.  Ten cadets with the Del Mar College Regional Fire Academy on Nov. 17 underwent one of the tests required by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection, which is part of DMC’s program completion requirements as well. The cadets were tasked with extinguishing three types of gas fires: a liquefied petroleum gas tank, a burning car and a dumpster fire.  Dressed in full firefighting gear, cadets found themselves working…

Grants return in spring

Del Mar is now offering a new program alongside the HEERF III Emergency Student Aid.  The college is currently using institutional HEERF grant money, funds the government gave directly to Del Mar College to use for the college, including the add-a-free-class campaign, said Joseph Ruiz, director of Del Mar’s Financial Aid Services.  Del Mar wants to encourage and help students by taking advantage of the program, which offers students an additional class during alternative terms for free in the spring 2022 semester. Also, additional funding for books will be available for students eligible for this program.  “In the fall semester…

Bachelor of Science in Nursing underway

For students in Del Mar’s new Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, balancing studies with their full-time jobs as nurses isn’t without its challenges — or rewards.  With BSN becoming a preferred credential in health care today, DMC started offering the bachelor’s degree this fall.  Because it is new, DMC has ensured that they gain feedback from students in the program and plan to continue shaping the program for all students’ needs and education.  “The student/instructor interactions have been positive. Faculty have extended extra availability to students as well as flexibility, to help with challenging student work schedules,” said Jennifer…

SGA gets creative with outreach

When Del Mar went virtual in spring 2020, the closures impacted the way students were able to interact with one another and altered the college community experience. The Office of Student Leadership and Campus Life and the Student Government Association got together to brainstorm a way to keep students engaged through the pandemic. “When the pandemic hit, we all sat down together to see how we can make this virtual,” said SGA President Sofia Jimenez. “We did a lot of work with the IT department to set it all up and everybody in the whole office pitched in.” Once set…

Technical programs face challenges amid pandemic

Hands-on learning continues with several changes The COVID-19 pandemic has affected many Del Mar students and programs as new protocols have been implemented and classes have been moved online.   “We have incredibly resilient and adaptable students so the transition to online has been a smooth one,” said Leah Eddlemon, director of the Medical Assisting Program.  This program is just one of Del Mar’s many technical programs that requires a person to learn by experience rather than just lecture. While many classes have been moved online, labs and clinicals have had to continue face-to-face with many changes.  “I think it has…

Nursing program taking applications for bachelor program

First class set to begin in fall The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is now accepting applications. Del Mar’s first bachelor program is a post-licensure track, meaning the students are already practicing nurses. The RN to BSN program expands on areas such as nursing informatics, community nursing, beginning research, and leadership and management. The first cohort begins in fall 2021 and will graduate in summer 2022. The cohort will have 30 students with plans for the number to increase annually. The preparation for the BSN began years ago when faculty began attaining higher levels of education so they could…
