Franco brothers shine in ‘The Disaster Artist’

“The Disaster Artist” is a personal chronicle of happy-go-lucky experimentalist actor Tommy Wiseau and his yearning for big Hollywood dreams on his pathway to making the cult classic widely regarded as the best worst movie, “The Room.” This is a directorial masterpiece put forth by James Franco, who plays Wiseau. His younger brother, Dave, plays Tommy’s best friend, Greg Sestero. The film is based on the nonfiction memoir of the same name penned by Greg Sestero and Tom Bissel. “The Room” became a classic cult film and found love and adoration when it wasn’t looking. “The Disaster Artist” features a…

Patriots Day Review

Jonathan Garcia Jgarcia@foghornnews.com   “Patriots Day” is based on the true story of the Boston Marathon bombing in April 2013, and the manhunt for those responsible for it. Director Peter Berg, who tackled another tragedy with last year’s “Deepwater Horizon,” takes great care in honoring those who were affected by the bombing, which left an impact on the city of Boston. Brothers Dzhokar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev (Alex Wolff and Themo Melikidze) set off two homemade bombs at the Boston Marathon, killing three and injuring nearly 300. Many people were separated from their loved ones in the confusion that followed, with…

Sherlock makes a thrilling return

Brittany Claramunt bclaramunt@foghornnews.com @BrittClaramunt   A typical TV series has about 13 episodes and comes out every year. Episodes run for an hour, with commercials, so the episode itself is roughly 40 minutes. “Sherlock,” on the other hand, is completely different. An episode of “Sherlock” is a full hour and a half with no commercials or interruptions. So far, each season has only 3 episodes. British shows in general are a full hour because in the U.K. they don’t get commercials while the show is airing. Their goal, according to the lead writers of the show Mark Gatiss and Steven…

Hidden Figures Review: a little known story rockets to becoming a must-see film

Mark Young myoung@foghornnews.com   Telling the largely unknown story of the black women who were a vital part in the space race, “Hidden Figures” is a must-see movie of an eye-opening perspective on a major event in U.S. history. Directed by Theodore Melfi, best known for 2014’s “St. Vincent,” “Hidden Figures” stars Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monáe and Octavia Spencer as three mathematicians in 1962 who deal with racism and sexism to try to reach the top of their field. In high school history, everyone remembers learning about the Cold War, the space race and the moon landing. However,…

La La Land Review: A 1950’s musical: 21st Century Edition

Mark Young myoung@foghornnews.com   Director Damien Chazelle has become a force to be reckoned with ever since 2014s “Whiplash,” and with “La La Land,” Chazelle becomes one of the best directors around. The musical starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone is fine-tuned and exact; however, it also panders to the people who made the movie. The Hollywood musical hasn’t been a constant force in film for many years now. While musicals can have success (i.e. “Hamilton”), the Hollywood musical genre didn’t extend beyond the ’50s, until “La La Land.” The film itself is an ode to old Hollywood, but also…

Thriller satisfies, but leaves more to be desired

“The Help” director Tate Taylor adapts last year’s hit novel written by Paula Hawkins, which was deemed “the next ‘Gone Girl’” by critics, for “The Girl on the Train.” However, the film proves that the two movies have little in common. The film follows Rachel Watson, an alcoholic who has an obsession with a couple she sees when she passes on the train every day. When she wakes up from a blackout covered in blood and discovers that one of the people she obsessed over has gone missing, she fears she had something to do with it. The unreliable narrator…
