Mayor costs city more than expected

Mark Young myoung@foghornnews.com   “Better late than never” may be the case most of the time, but when it comes to Corpus Christi politics, the wait may prove costly. While some in Corpus Christi praised the media for its work in exposing the lies of the city’s newly elected mayor, Dan McQueen, some like Paul Gottemoller, a political science professor at Del Mar College, say the media should have done its job sooner. “They waited until he was elected as mayor before they began to seriously look into his background. Now we are out of a mayor,” Gottemoller said. McQueen…

Brian Sellers, who has taught English and speech at Collegiate since 2008, has been charged with having an improper relationship between an educator and a student, a second-degree felony. His bail was set at $50,000. Sellers turned himself in to police at about 8 p.m. on Jan. 30, then waived his rights and gave a video and audio confession, according to the affidavit. He was arrested at 10:20…

The Golden Globes offer a first look at who will take home the Academy Award

By: Mark Young myoung@foghornnews.com While awards season for films usually begin in December, the Golden Globes officially kicks off Oscar fever. The Golden Globes not only gives a good idea of which films will be nominated but also shows who the current frontrunners are. The winners are chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of about 90 journalists, who tend to pick some very strange and offbeat winners that aren’t the clear winners. However, that doesn’t mean they’re any less telling. The Frontrunners “La La Land” is the clear front runner of the 2017 pack with the…

Spring semester offers less delays

Mark Young myoung@foghornnews.com   After several semesters of long lines and even some system crashes, students reported few headaches during spring registration, thanks largely to several steps Del Mar College has taken to ease the process. “At the end of the fall semester we started to push for students to register for the spring semester sooner. This early push has made a noticeable impact on lines and made things go a lot smoother,” said Patricia Benavides-Dominguez, dean of Outreach and Enrollment. While the added communication helped, so did some technical changes put in place by the college. After a computer…

Hidden Figures Review: a little known story rockets to becoming a must-see film

Mark Young myoung@foghornnews.com   Telling the largely unknown story of the black women who were a vital part in the space race, “Hidden Figures” is a must-see movie of an eye-opening perspective on a major event in U.S. history. Directed by Theodore Melfi, best known for 2014’s “St. Vincent,” “Hidden Figures” stars Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monáe and Octavia Spencer as three mathematicians in 1962 who deal with racism and sexism to try to reach the top of their field. In high school history, everyone remembers learning about the Cold War, the space race and the moon landing. However,…

La La Land Review: A 1950’s musical: 21st Century Edition

Mark Young myoung@foghornnews.com   Director Damien Chazelle has become a force to be reckoned with ever since 2014s “Whiplash,” and with “La La Land,” Chazelle becomes one of the best directors around. The musical starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone is fine-tuned and exact; however, it also panders to the people who made the movie. The Hollywood musical hasn’t been a constant force in film for many years now. While musicals can have success (i.e. “Hamilton”), the Hollywood musical genre didn’t extend beyond the ’50s, until “La La Land.” The film itself is an ode to old Hollywood, but also…

Buying books? Explore all your options before buying

Mark Young myoung@foghornnews.com   One of the largest departures from high school for many college students is having to buy your own books. The often-pricey textbooks are a vital part of success in the classroom and are commonly required by many professors. While the Del Mar College Bookstore, on the first floor in the Harvin Center, offers nearly every required textbook, it is not the only way to buy textbook. Knowing your options could bring steep savings. DMC education major Analysa Hinojosa checked both online and in the on-campus bookstore for the textbooks she needed. While she noticed some prices…

Del Mar to remain open through water contamination

Late Wednesday night city officials announced that the water supply had been contaminated and was unsafe both for consumption and general use. Around 4:30 this morning a DMC alert went out informing students, faculty and staff that the college would continue normal operations. Unlike the three previous water boils this year the water cannot be boiled or filtered to make it safe for use. According to the Caller Times, two chemicals, Indulin AA-86 and hydrochloric acid, were found in the water supply. The campuses remained open today and the school made bottled water and hand sanitizer available to staff as…

‘Gilmore Girls’ return is a love-letter to fans

Hit series moves to Netflix 16 years after original debut When “Gilmore Girls” debuted on the WB (RIP) in 2000, the show stood apart from the rest of television. IT was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, a woman; starred two women, Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel; and was, in a sense, for women. For seven years, the show created a fast-paced world full of pop culture references and family problems. Nearly a decade later, Netflix is reviving the show and bringing viewers back to the world of Stars Hollow. “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” once again follows the exploits…
